How many of you believe in God?

[quote]
Actually Britain (an atheist nation) tops US. Based on "violent crime," the most safest countries are ones that are predominantly religious.

Ugh, you really don't understand statistics. CORRELATION IS NOT CAUSATION.

If religion = safety, then why is Columbia (an extremely Catholic country) one of the most murder plagued countries in the world? I know! Religion causes murder!

See how bad the logic is?

Yeah, people, let's get back to discussing God, and not what men think that they say or do in the name of God.

By the way, could someone post some statistics on here? Are Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Britain, predominately atheistic? What percentage of the population in each of these countries identify themselves as atheists?

" religion is the opiad of the people"
that says it all

I have already posted the statistics. See pages 51 or 52.

Notice:
1.) I was referring to BRITAIN, and I was not attempting to make a generalization.
2.) I proved that there is a CORRELATION between atheism and countries with high crime rate. It is YOU who is trying to proove lack of crime and atheism.
3.) In the case of BRITAIN, I used the word "PROLLY," which implies that I havent invalidated lurking variables.

Colombia is a POOR country. Crime is typical of poor countries, obviously. My point is that its unusual to have a high crime rate (such as in Britain), after being such a wealthy nation.

Britain also has historically had one of the highest unemployment rates in the developed world.

Correlation is still not causation.

And whats the reason for Canada? LOL

Hmmm... that's interesting. I never knew that so many European countries were so predominately atheistic. I mean, the incidence of it in Sweden is astounding--45-85%. That's dangerously close to smiting level.

You still haven't proved JACK. Japan, despite growing crime rates, is MUCH safer than the US for murder and theft.

Although I didn't find more recent stats, in 1999 (when they were all still godless commie countries), Switzerland, Japan, and Sweden all had much lower crime indices than the US.

And Japan was the lowest, despite being filled with heathens and atheists. Explain.

^^ You can explain how Japan's crime rate went up by 150. Trust in police is also at an all time low. Please explain.

Interestingly, Canada still has far fewer homicides and robberies than the US.

Looks like theists, when they go to commit crimes, go for the big ones! ;)

You still don't get it, do you? Even if crime has gone up, that doesn't mean that from 1960 to 1999, Japan was FAR FAR safer than the US. And still godless and communistic and fascist and evil.

Besides, in case you missed it, in 1999 the economy took a big downturn and government revenue for police has thinned. The article mentions that. Maybe part of the reason crime is on the rise is the rise in unemployment and economic disparities?

Nah. It's godlessness!

That's dangerously close to smiting level.

LOL
I agree, it is interesting. Even more so is the fact that the percentage of atheism in the US is comparatively very small (I've seen estimates from 3-8%).

Atheism levels and crime rates show an awfully weak correlation. Europe shows much higher atheism levels, yet crime rates in most nations are equal or less than in the US with its comparatively low atheism levels.

Regardless, I doubt that the correlation is strong. Even so, I doubt that atheism levels cause crime to increase (otherwise, Japan and South Korea would be anarchic.)

I'm a full-blown atheist, yet I have committed no crimes in my life other than speeding, running a red light, and forging my mother's signature on high school notes. Oh, and I once stole a grape at a market because I wasn't sure if I would buy the pack. I did. So in the end, I stole from myself... :(

Well Ari, your life of crime is obviously the result of your godlessness and you ought to repent immediately and convert to the religion of my choosing, after which you will never commit crime or sin again.

Because we all know that Christians, Jews, and Muslims NEVER commit crimes! :D

Haha, I laughed when I read that.

arn't the mobsters supposed to be quite religious? but they confess their sins, so it's all ok.

Alright guys listen up here, I am an Agnostic but think that religion is okay as long as it provides stability and balance but not close-mindedness and fanaticism. Unfortunately for many followers the extremists often come to power because of their zeal. Sevendust, you place such an importance on official country religion but here's an interesting study. Look at #8 http://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php?section=library&page=britt_23_2.

Hey guess what! The Vatican got rid of children's limbo, the purgatory or separate Hell unBaptised children go to. So whoever said I was crazy about Catholic beliefs wasn't really that imformed themselves. That'll be all.
