How many of you believe in God?

Ugh, can you guys go and get smitten already? You're wasting precious server space. ;)

Because this thread is soo much worse than say the "worst movies EVAR LOLZ!" thread. :p

The only way that thread could be worse is if everyone is debating over whether or not the answer is Passion of the Christ. :D

Haha, Passion of the Christ.

Sevendust, you asked what is the purpose of the Bible and the Qu'ran if they are not the word of God. As a Christian, I really can't speak for the Qu'ran, but I can see a purpose for the Bible even if it is not the word of God.
In the Old Testament, there were many, many prophecies concerning the life of Jesus Christ (upwards of 35, I believe, I don't exactly know the number off the top of my head). There were prohpecies concerning Christ's manner of birth, place of birth, miracles, manner of death, people's reactions (spitting, insulting, etc.), his burial, and on many other topics. So whether or not the Bible is the Word of God, it can serves as a testamony to the divinity of Jesus Christ.

If by the Old Testament you mean the five books of Moses or, better, the Hebrew Bible, few Jews would agree with you, and they would claim that little relates to predictions in the life of Jesus. Sure, because he was Jewish, a lot applied to him, but if by his birth and the other things about his life, you mean that he is the messiah, well, those Jews who thought he was have a very different name- we call them Christians.

Many prophecies came from the pentaeuch, but many came from other areas of the Bible. I am talking about Old Testament prophecies fulfilled in the New Testament.

Whoa whoa I never even heard about these prophecies. Do you know where they are in the OT?

Of all the holy books, the Bible is definitely the most inaccurate. Its been rewritten numerous times and this alters the entire value and meaning. No wonder why atheists find it easy to bash the Bible.

I presented a few of the prophecies earlier in this thread, I'm not sure where.

Ok Sevendust, keep in mind that atheists aren't the only ones who don't believe in the Bible. I'm a theist but don't believe in it, for example.

I was talking in relation to this thread.

There were prophecies concerning Jesus's place of birth (micah 5:2), time of birth (Dan. 9:25; Gen. 49:10), Manner of birth (Is. 7:14), Betrayal (Psalm 41:9; Zechariah 11:12-13) Manner of death (Ps. 109:24, 25; Ps.22:16, Isaiah 53:12), people's reactions (Isaiah 50:6), piercing (Zechariah 12:10) and his burial (Isaiah 53:9).

Each of these was fulfilled, according to the new testament.

That doesnt make the new testament accurate. Almost all holy books have prophecies that came true.

Also, are there any prophecies about Jesus that DIDN'T come true?

http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/proph/long.html

Just search for the word Jesus.

stewie

Some of the passages you cited are vague, at best. It takes a lot of maneuvering to see how Jesus would fit those prophecies. How do we know that the data haven't been "cooked"? How do we know that Jesus wasn't written about so that he would fit the prophecies? The Gospels weren't written down until long after the crucifixion.

Furthermore, one can hardly vouch for the reliability of the 24th chapter of Matthew, the 13th chapter of Mark, and the 21st chapter of Luke, which all prophesy great happenings, and end those prophecies with "Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled."

That generation passed nearly two millennia ago, and nothing has happened.

God is good!..in my opinion.

I had no intention of being involved in this thread, but certain posters really captured my attention. Trancestorm, the way you post makes me believe that you think you are too sophisticated for the idea of "God." Do you really think there is no Being superior to you?
