How many people get their research published as a lead author while still in high-school?

Hi!

I was wondering how many people get their research published in a peer-reviewed journal while still in HS? Is it a large number. Does having published a research paper as a lead author greatly influence your college admissions decisions or is it taken as just another achievement? I am primarily looking for the number of people that do so. Is it a large number or is it only a handful?

Thanks in advance!

Almost zero. The vast majority of high schoolers (and even undergrads most of the time) get published research by assisting a professor or grad student doing their own research.

Using common sense, I’m going to guess it is a very small minority.
