know about this college. Apparently it is one of the best liberal arts colleges, and yet hardly anybody has posted here - the people who frequent these boards are some of the brightest and most inquisitive people who will be attending college, and yet very few seem to give this college a lot of attention here.

Is this a false observation, is the college so good at answering questions that you do not need to post here (I have found them to be very prompt and attentive when answering my questions), or is there some other reason?

Mind you this isnt a 'flame', just a question -_-

I have been wondering the same exact thing Anarchy. I remember visiting Trinity, and I truly thought it to be a great school (which it is!) It is weird that hardly anybody posts here. In fact, if I was not accepted to Vassar ED, I would've been applying ED II to Trinity.

I know someone who on this board for a year and half and is a freshman there this year and likes it pretty much but is working her butt off.

I've also read a lot of posts over the years and the general consensus is something like: reasonably demanding but not top LAC. Very preppy student body, lots of social structure revolves around Greek life. Great campus located in a so-so part of Hartford.

As to the OP's question about traffic, the LAC's seemed to have more traffic on the Old Board...I don't know why. Some schools like UCLA also had much more traffic on the Old Board. A lot of people will be more inclined to post if there are active threads....

Hi,
I had the opportunity to spend a weekend at Trinity there was a group of about 50 of us and we were scattered over all different dorms. The dorm i stayed at was very nice compared to most other colleges i visited...but trinity does have some dorms that are alot nicer and some that are worse. Overall I think the housing situation is good. Originally, I had my heart set on attending school in DC or Virginia due to my interest in political science. I had no intention of applying early to Trinity, but after visiting I knew thats where i wanted to go. I applied early decision I and was accepted. I actually received an amzing financial aid package which Trinity is known for. In regards to the social situation I attened a few parties while I was there and although there was alcohol it is not forced on anyone. I actually came across a girl who did not drink at all her freshman year and said it was a great year regardless. If you have any questions you think a future freshman can answer just reply to the post.

If Trinity is my number two option, and assuming my number one school rejects me early decision, will I be able to apply ED II? (Im a Junior, I know still long way to go) I really like Trinity and it is the only LAC in my top 5 schools (well Macalester is close). Does anyone know this?

I wish this thread was more active so I would be able to get more information.

Go to this thread (located in CC's "search and selection" category on a query on Trinity C. - therere comments on that thread as well as a link to an earlier thread on Trinity that contains a great deal of information for you to view

I also recall an extremekly helpful discussion when I was cionsidering Trinity that took place somertime between Jan - April '04 so you muight want to check those archives, too.

There was a really interesting discussion last spring that I can't locate - it was on the Top LAC site and a mother an daughter went into great detail about Trinity (all to the good) that really wrapped up my decision though I had been leaning heavily toward Trinity over Bryn Mawr and UPenn anyway. I'll keep hunting for it.

Sorry - just notice there are duplicate threads above and I cannot seem to pull up the site address for the other thread in Feb 2004. But just scroll down to the Feb 2004 archives and once in, do a search for "Trinity" - and you'll find a thread "Is Trinity College Legit" that will also provide you with insights.

Hi, first year trin student here...thought i would post some of the dirt for you guys (since no one did it for me)...the mentality that Trin is in a "so-so part of hartford" is admissions office code they use around here (like when the tell u hartford is as safe as NY or Boston) Hartford is amazingly dangerous, I think fallujah may be safer, for people who like stats, its ranked 7th most dangerous in the country, no one leaves campus who does not have a car, and even those with cars drive very fast (cars are not as common as on other campuses because the theft rate is so high here 1 in a 100 though it seems like more). It is like being stuck in a cage. Hartford has almost nothing to offer. The people at trin IMO are all steryotypical J.Crew clones, which dosn't bother some people (particularly the J. Crew clones) but is absolutly frustrating to someone who is not. Trinity does have top-notch academics and the professors and staff are the best but it is just overshaddowed by the city and the student body, not to mention the financial difficulty the college is having (we had to cut the hartford police guarding the campus from outsiders and the school is debating a fence around campus to keep them away). It is so bad that many people joke that the two cannons on our main quad are there to "scare ghetto-hartford away". It seems like every weekend morning we get an email from campus safety saying there was a rape or sexual assault or robbery (no murders yet on campus but in frog hollow, the neighborhood surrounding trin, there were 27 in 2003) on or near campus. There was a hostage situation 2 miles south of campus where a guy took a police officer hostage and eventually killed the cop and himself. Sorry if i seem so negitive, I just never heard this from anyone and i regret so much coming here, I'm transfering out at the end of the semester and am counting the days until I do. So i know its probably wrong for me to voice my personal opinion (although i wish someone had to me) I say, unless you are urself one of those J. Crew cookiecutter clones (you know who u are) and you don't mind the city, don't come here, its just not worth it and there are so many other LAC's to choose from.

Also, for those of you who have toured, I applied as a tour guide and trained but I never gave one tour because the Admissions office had us blatantly lying to prospective students (and more often parents, since they ask the safety questions) about Hartford in regards to safety, things to do, what we did off campus, etc. (just watch a tour guide flush whenever safety is mentioned, if you grill him/her in private u may get some real answers)

Wow, and excuse my language, but holy *****, what you're telling me is crazy.

I am the type of person who doenst give a crap about factors like "preppiness" or "perceived safety" or whatever, but what you are telling me is insane. I come from Colombia, that's supposed to be a terrorist country or whatever, but we had nothing like what you are telling me overthere.

It might be a great school and everything but I cant trade tranquility and peace for anything. Thank you so much, you may have just saved me from a horrible experience.

Don't just go by my testimony...and I'm sure its nothing as bad as living in a terrorist state but if its peace and tranquility you are looking for its not here, you will find yourself always looking over you're shoulder but again, do more research and don't throw out the school based solely on what i said, I could be a moron for all you know. (I'm not, in my opinion, lol) Check out this website http://trinity.dailyjolt.com/forum/ and to a lesser extent this website http://www.trinitytripod.com/ and read back a few weeks to see whats going on for you're self...you'll find that some people don't hate it here nearly as much as I do (though they seem to find more fault, they ride it out for some reason).

Fun Fact from this forum: According to Professor Kassow(senior history prof here, btw), Israel (including the West Bank and Gaza) is safer than Hartford, on a deaths per capita basis.

Are most of these crimes in a part of the city that can be avoided by Trinity students?
From reading the Daily Jolt, the neighborhood around campus is terrible.

To answer you're question, there is no part of hartford that Trinity students don't avoid, the neighborhood that trin is in is terrible and most of those crimes described here take place closer to trin...but there are worse areas of hartford, namely the north end. Hartford has a small (maybe two square blocks) downtown area that I've never heard of anyone here utilizing, it has a few resturants, nothing else really...its just too hard to get there because even though its only 10 blocks away, at night there is no way to safely get there except by car, busses are amazingly shady and no one would ever consider walking, as i recall, there is a shuttle provided by the college but if you miss it (it dosnt run that often) ur stuck in a bus or taxi. One time this guy got sick and he had to walk to walgreens 5 blocks down and he rounded up a posse to go down with him during the day (and he would have been stupid if he hadnt). Most people who do leave campus avoid hartford all together, there is a mall a few miles south and the only other thing to do within a 10 mile radius is to go to West Hartford center (sort of a main streen USA) which is safe but so hard to get to because of the long bus ride that no one wants to take. To answer you're question, there is no part of Hartford proper that is free of excessive crime, muggings are the most common. Crime not only comes right up to the border of campus but is on campus, because there is no border betweent the neighborhood and the ghetto. A few weeks ago I was in the athletic center and when i returned to my dorm there was an email that a woman was carjacked in the parking lot of the building I was in, and this was 4pm, broad daylight! And because freshman (and all but about 100 sophomores) are not allowed to have cars there is really no escape. But you know, there are a lot of people who don't seem to mind the city (don't ask me why) so all I can say is do you're research, if you come to tour, stay a little after dark (near you're car) see if you can handle it, I grew up in the NYC suburbs, so I may be more sheltered than most, but I never felt unsafe walking around manhattan at night (NYC is now one of the safest cities in the country thanks to Gulliani) of course comparing Hartford to NYC is like comparing Apples to Grapes, as a lot of people say "Hartford is a block of New York in the middle of nowhere".
