Anyone have a sense regarding how many of these are awarded each year? As expected, I can't find the information anywhere.
I do find it interesting that Tulane clearly indicates how many Dean's and Paul Tulane scholarships it grants, but doesn't give any indication of how many Presidentials it annually awards - probably because they want to maintain flexibility given changes in the applicant pool.

You are comparing apples and oranges to some extent. The DHS and PTA are based on donations made by alums and so the earnings from those funds pay for the scholarships. That is why the number of them are fixed, more or less. Now I am making some assumptions here, but I think it is right to say that the reason the DHS used to have 100 awards and dropped to 75 about 6 years ago is that this is the same time frame when interest rates went way down and market returns got much smaller. It is also my understanding that one of the contributors to the DHS is David Filo, a Tulane alum and a co-founder of Yahoo. Just FYI on that last one.

The Presidential, on the other hand, is really just Tulane giving a discount on tuition to students it really wants to attract to the school. The better your merit stats, the more discount Tulane awards, up to the $32K max (this year). And while I imagine Tulane budgets how much revenue they expect from tuition, the number of Presidential awards is unpredictable since Tulane doesn’t know how many of those offered this scholarship will end up at Tulane. Not to mention that some number of awardees will go on to win a DHS or PTA. So yes they maintain flexibility depending on the quality of the applicant pool, but it is the nature of the two different kinds of awards and how they are funded that is the reason that there is no fixed number for the Presidential, Distinguished Scholar, Founders, etc. These are not really “funded” per se, but as I mentioned represent an incentive up front to the strongest academic applicants to attend Tulane.

So to answer your question, there are no published stats on how many are offered the Presidential Scholarship, but around 7-8% of applicants might be a good guess. But just a guess.

Thanks FC! Tulane is likely DD’s first choice but enrolling is going to depend on the Presidential or the DHS/PTA, with a DHS/PTA making it an easy financial decision.

Wow, that would be over 2000 students!

True (if I am right), but just like in my answer I just posted about the DHS, Tulane knows that only a certain percentage will end up at Tulane. Obviously these are the highest stat students and a lot of them have their eyes set on and will get HYPS and other schools even more selective than Tulane, and will enroll there. Years of results gives them a very good idea how it will turn out. Let’s put it this way. I feel even more confident with a number of about 15% of the entering class being on Premier Distinguished, Presidential, or one of the full tuition awards. Because that is about how many they want in the Honors Program starting out, from what I have seen in the past.

Thx, FC.
