How many SAT tries maximum?

I wonder how many times maximum you can take the SAT I and still be considered competitive for top colleges (assuming you eventually score in the 2400-2600 range). I have heard that too many tries might make you look bad. Please share your experience.

At a Princeton admission info session, the adcom said if you take it once we'll accept that score; if you take it twice we'll take the highest composite; if you take it more than 3 times we'll count it as an EC.

The 2600 range? O.o

Sorry it was a typo (should be 2200-2400 range).

To NJYoungin, thank you for the sarcasm. But why so harsh?

Playing at the expense of others? That's bad, man!

Anyway, thanks for responding.

I always hear that taking it more than three times makes the adcoms wonder what you're doing w/ your time, and that all the time you're "studying" for the SAT's you could have been doing something else more valuable.

Honestly, it doesn't matter how many times you take the SAT I. The only concern is that after a while, you'll wear yourself out taking the exam (it is long, remember), so the ad office might raise an eyebrow (rather humourously). Remember, it only is one morning each month, so they can't be too concerned about it taking up all your time. In all seriousness, though, I wouldn't worry if you take it 3 or even 4 times. However, As you grow tired of the test, your score probably won't go up after a while.

Take it 2-3 times. DON'T take it more. Your score won't go higher. And by then it's just a pathetic attempt to squeeze 20-30 points out of your highest composite score, a difference that doesn't even matter.

The third time I took it I did much worse than my first two times. Why? I was sick of studying for it. And now I always wonder if that played a part in all those rejections I got.

It shouldn't matter how many times you take it as long as your score increased each time, however, the number 3 seems to be the preferable one here on CC.

i'd stick with 3x:

1st = 2070
2nd = 2160
3rd = 2320 :-) yay.
