How many semesters of English do I have to take if I'm majoring in Computer Science?

I got a 5 in AP English, and am probably going to pass AP Literature with a 4 or higher. Would that count as me already taking 2 English courses? I'm absolutely sick of English, especially after 2 years of AP. I would love it if I never have to take an English class ever again. LOL

lpx,

I’m sorry to break the news to you but UCI is known to have a stickler writing requirement. You basically cannot get out of it unless you petition a course you’ve taken at a community college BEFORE enrolling at UCI. Check the chart below. You knocked some good GEs though?

So the two AP’s I have taken count for two courses toward the UCI GE English requirement? How many Eng courses are required for non-English majors? Sorry I’m still unsure of how all the electives and GE courses work, even after looking through the UCI website :/

Ah, sorry. There are a lot of GE categories you have to satisfy (~7). Each section requires you to take 2-3 courses. Yes, UCI is known to have a horrible GE system, but I think it has gotten better.

Writing has its own requirements while those english courses you’ve taken satisfies the humanities section. You will have to take Writing 39B and 39C. If you do well in Writing 39B, you can take courses in creative writing or poetry which tend to be easier since Writing 39C is writing and research. Read around the catalog to get a better understanding. Feel free to ask me if you’re confused on anything.

I see, so that would mean that I only need to take 1 more course in humanities, but still need 3 courses in writing? Thanks!

You will need two quarters of the university writing courses. The third one, however, will be taken under your school (ICS or EECS). These are super easy =].

If it were up to me, I’d make every CS major take the full year of humanities core (and that they require a B- or better).

Writing ability is one of those things (in contrast to, say, differential equations) which actually has the chance to profoundly affect your life after graduation. CS majors that can’t write well are kind of pathetic (and I’m a CS major at UCI, btw).

Well I don’t consider my writing ability to be sub par. I’d just much rather focus on other subjects which I’m actually interested in. Thanks for the input though!

Writing at UCI isn’t that bad if your on top of things. I’m not that great at it, and I still pulled through with a B, and B+. You have to take an upper division writing course applied to your major, and that is unavoidable as far as I know.
