How many times is a charm?

Any research into how many times is the optimal to take the ACT? Some kids take the first one as a warm up to see how they do (little or no prep) take another with more prep and take a third for real. Then they make take one last one in the fall of their senior year to take one last stab at a higher score...what are your thoughts on this? Do you think you just level off after 3 or do you get the hang of the test and keep improving as you go along and gain more confidence?

Well, I’d say it’s always best to take it more than once to get a feel for it and try for improvement, but I really don’t see a point in taking it more than three times max. unless you’re trying for a specific score for scholarships or whatever. Most people will hit 34+ with enough work. After that, it’s not worth the to time and money to take it again.

^and there’s no point in taking it a third time if you don’t put in the work to improve it on the second.

I am quite sure it varies person to person. I just took the ACT for the third time this month, so I have not yet received my scores. But I did see improvement between my first and second times taking the test. I have a friend who improved by three points between her first and second attempts, but then her score went down after that. She took it again this month as well, so we’ll see what happens, but the point is that different people will need to take it different numbers of times to reach their highest potential.

Also, if by the third time you take the test you don’t see any major improvement in your scores, that is probably a good sign that you’ve done the best you can do.

I got 28,27, 30. I didn’t really do any more prep for the 3rd one than I did for 1st and second. Waiting on 4th test scores. I’m done taking it.

I also think that when you take the test makes a difference, usually you can score higher in, say, September of senior year than in June of your sophomore year.

theundertaken-just wondering…was one section bringing your score down? you were improving every time. were you improving in every subject or was one subject consistently bringing you up or down? just curious how it works over time.

I took one cold, without any preparation, and got a 33. Took another one 5 months later, a little preparation, got a 36. Needless to say I’m done taking the test after 2 tries. I’d say as long as you keep putting work in, there’s no reason not to keep taking tests. It’s just when you start taking multiple tests without doing any studying/practice tests where your score won’t go up.

Just remember that you can’t take it more than 12 times.

I can’t imagine putting myself through that 12 times!
