Hi guys, I am a sophomore and was planning to major in Econ at a UC.(Got accepted at SC, waiting on Davis,LA, Berkeley.) I have completed IGETC as well as all other General Ed requirements. But now I would like to major in Engineering, and I was wondering how many more years it would take me to finish the pre-reqs. Spring Quarter starts next week and I am starting off by taking Math 1A, Physics 2A, and Chem 25. If I take classes in the summer as well(maybe 1 or 2 depending on if I can handle it) how long will it take? I want to transfer to SJSU or a UC it does not matter to me. I just want to finish the pre-reqs ASAP. The major is Mechanical Engineering to be specific.

I dont really know how your classes are labeled at your school but basically you have to take the 5 semesters of calculus, 3 semesters of calc based physics, 2 for general chemistry and all the engineering classes available at your cc. Or at least thats how it is at my school. Took me 3 years(108 units) but I also had to take my General ed.

just look up the classes you need and plan out all your semesters. its gonna vary for each person, depending on how many classes you think you can handle and how many classes you need total. you need 60 semester units minimum to transfer and that takes the average person 2 years. so if you want the short answer its 2 years.

im an aerospace engineering major which is essentially the same as mechanical engineering and i finished in 2 years. i didn’t have any prior college credits or AP classes from high school. so i completed all the pre reqs for engineering (61 semester units) in those 2 years. i started off at trig, then pre calc, finished calc series, and then differential equations.

im not sure what kind of details you are looking for. engineering is a 4-year degree. 2 years here, 2 years there.

2 semesters of Calc with analytic geometry, 1 semester of multivariable, 1 semester of linear algebra and 1 semeseter of differential equations. Thats how my school does it. but I started in precalc so I had to take 7 semesters.

Yea I am in my 2nd year already so 2 and 2 ain’t gonna happen lol I am at Math 1A which is the first calculus(1A,1B,1C,1D). Physics 2a is the pre-requisite for the Physics Calc series, And Chem 25 is the pre-req for the Chem series. I am hoping I can do most of the classes in a year, but I doubt I will be able to finish all of them.

You need four semesters or six quarters to complete the math if you are starting from the first calculus course (if you are at a semester system school, you may have to take linear algebra simultaneously with multivariable calculus or differential equations if it is a separate course from differential equations).

You need two to three semesters or three to four quarters for physics. You may need a semester or two after that to take any lower division engineering courses available at your nearby community colleges, and any other required courses (chemistry?). See [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) for the listings of the needed courses.

FWIW, it took me 4 years, but one semester (first) was only 1 class and another (last) was only 2 classes. I did a summer class twice. I also didn’t know I was doing engineering until after a year, but due to going back to algebra in math and associated pre-recs later, I couldn’t have done it any faster.

I’m going to try and take as many of the requirements as I can in a year and than just transfer and take what I don’t finish at the University. According to what I have planned I should be able to finish everything except the last Math class(2A) if I take summer courses as well.

Sounds to me like you go to Foothill. Either way, for mechanical engineering, that’s going to be tough. You need Calc 1A-1D, then Math 2A (or differential Equations), finally to finish the math series, you need Math 2B (or Linear Algebra). You’ll also need the full physics series, 4A-4D along with Chem 1A and possibly Chem 1B (however you can get away with not taking Chem 1B, I was an electrical engineering major from Foothill and got accepted into UCs and San Jose state without Chem 1B). You’ll also need to take one comp sci class, preferably C++ as most schools want that - so that would be CIS 15A. Assuming you have two English courses already from your IGETC, then that’s all you need. If you somehow manage to have extra time, take some of the Engineering classes, like materials or statics - it’ll look good on your transcript. But besides that, everything I listed out is what is required of you to take for a successful transfer (of course having a good GPA too! :O).

Estimated time to complete all of that? 2-3 years. So if time isn’t an issue, go for it and good luck (:

Hey guys, let’s say the entire physics series (it’s actually partial, like one class per year, no joke) is offered, at my CC, should I wait to take the physics series when
I transfer or will the UC’s completely disregard my application? Also, the Linear Algebra and Differential Equations classes do not articulate to the UC’s, I can’t really take them at any other CC because I live very far from the nearest CC. Any suggestions on what I should do? Do you think they will still consider an application if not all the classes are offered at my CC? Just let me know any information you have, thank you in advance guys!
