How much aid did you get?

First of all, my EFC is zero.
With that it in mind, this is what I got:

NYU Grants:
LSP Scholarship: 5,000
J. Eckhouse Scholarship: 2,500
Provost's Grant: 2,000
University Grant: 1,385

Total in NYU grants: 10,885

*Federal Grants: *
Expected ACG Grant: 375
Expected Pell Grant: 2,675

Total in Federal Grants: 3,050

Loans + Work-Study:
Federal Work-Study Elegibility: 2,000
Suggested Stafford Loan: 1,750
Suggested Unsubsidized Stafford Loan: 1,000
Suggested PLUS Loan: 8,356

*Total in Loans and Work-Study:13,115 *

TOTAL: 27,221
How did I do? Keep in mind that this is per semester...

EFC - 18k

Trustee Scholarship - 20000
Work Study - 4000

Stafford Loan - 3500
Unsubsidized Stafford Loan - 2000
PLUS Loan - 24,941

my parents aren’t accepting all of the PLUS Loan, and i have some outside scholarships that will decrease it

(this is per year)

Redoktober and stephennn, I think you guys did pretty well, since NYU has a poor reputation for FA.

LSP scholarship 7,500
J. Eckhouse Scholarship: 5,000
no grants or anything else just a TON of loans

per year…
20k stern scholarship

no fed grants

basically 35k in loans… which i don’t really mind… but obviously i wouldn’t mind having less… anyone think there’s a chance of asking for more? nyu doesn’t take the css profile, so i think they don’t consider special circumstances as much… if i say i’m a quadruplet so i have 3 siblings in college at the same time, do you think they might consider adding something?

RedOktober, NYU is making you get into over $100,000 in debt and your EFC is zero. I’m really sorry for such a horrible FA package. They really do rob their students. That just blows my mind. It’s practically an admit-deny. Are you going to go to NYU?

NYU “met” my full need, but about 20k is in loans. That means finishing college with 80k debt. Whoa.

Does the LSP have to do with the Liberal studies program? Also, if you didn’t turn in fafsa, can you still get scholarships? what happens if you turn it in late?

Did the FA stuff come seperately? I got my accept packet today (the big purple folder with the two booklets), but i haven’t gotten anything about FA

If he has an EFC of zero, that means he can afford to just pay his way through, no? No need to take out loans or anything, as long as his parents support him.

Ambivalence - Yes, FA comes with the acceptance packets. It’s a booklet with your name and all the information.

I don’t get your second post, though. Having an EFC of 0 means (for me) that neither me nor my parents can afford the entire tuition. Loans are kind of a bad idea, I think…

Why shouldn’t October have some loans. Just because his EFC is zero means he should get a free ride. I would say the majority of students at NYU will have 20k to 35k in loans. It doesn’t really matter what your need is when they tell you you can take a 35k parent plus loan to pay the bill.

Yes, but a lot of low-income families have responsibilities to help support their family after college, I know I do. I do not know Oktober personally, so I can’t that is the case him. However, for me and for a few of my friends, we have been working through all of high school to help supplement our family’s income. After college, I still need to do that. I agree hssenior that private college is not an entitlement for anyone, and for most schools, one should expect to graduate with some loans. With that said, 100,000 in loans is too much for a EFC 0 family, and NYU knows that. It’s sad that they have such bad FA – they really need to improve it.

they aren’t going to improve it to the point that they can meet the full need for every kid. They don’t have that high of an endowment and there are 20K undergrad students. They don’t proclaim to meet full need.

NYU will usually list your EFC as a suggested plus loan. Don’t ever expect NYU to give FREE money in excess of your EFC.

If your efc is 20K and your parents have to borrow to pay it, that is not NYU’s concern. as for EFC 0 people, there are probably some that get very good scholarships, and even with Pell grants, and any other ‘free’ federal or state money, will still have to take out max stafford and perkins loans.

the COA of NYU is over 52K. NOTHING IS FREE. they are not Harvard

I agree with Rocker.
The amount they gave me is not enough, especially if I have 0 EFC.

Should I appeal?

Average percent of need met: 72%

Average financial aid package: $26,823

Average need-based loan: $4,946

Average need-based scholarship or grant award: $19,391

[College Search - New York University - NYU - Cost & Financial Aid](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

That seems like their average package is 20% loans and 80% Scholarships/grants. Yours is practically 50%/50%.

Seems like an Admit-deny to me.

RedOktober - be honest. How much free money would you have to get from NYU to make it doable. Figure you get the max pell ~5300 (I don’t know exact amount), 5500 stafford, 2400 Perkins (they told me this was the max they give, I don’t know for sure) and 4000 work study (that you have to earn). That’s about 17200

If you are a NY resident you might get a Tap grant, or one of the other federal grants for low efc people. That STILL means that NYU would have to GIVE you 30000 more in scholarships.

They might do this for a FEW people, but they can’t and won’t do it for EVERY person with a 0 EFC that they admit.

They won’t say that no one with a 0 EFC goes to NYU, because there are probably a tiny amount that got an amazing scholarship

The rep I spoke to in London said there wasn’t much point in appealing but that the FA people will “work with you” to help you make the decision - I think it means they’ll explain exactly about the work-study and loans…

Do you have other schools that offered you more?

hsseniorlooking - 20-35K overall in loans is one thing, but 20-35k per year? That makes me shudder a bit. I do agree, though, that we can’t expect such a large school to meet all its students’ full need but it’s obviously a deciding factor for some families. I bet a good percentage of people who decided not to attend NYU did so because they just… couldn’t afford it. Nothing against the school. I hope my kids won’t have to face these dilemmas and be able to choose the college of their liking without worrying about money… but don’t all parents hope for that?

my package is pretty much identical to his/hers (the thread starter)

i got less amount in grant than another person who has a significant EFC…wth?

This a disgrace. You have to be either REALLY broke or REALLY rich to go to school. NYU is, however, a private institution and they can charge us whatever the h*ll they want.

It’s supply and demand. People would eat dog ***** to attend NYU which means if YOU can’t afford it, some trust fund kid CAN.

Fortunately, I’ve done 2 years at a community college which has save my education a good bundle. I personally would be more willing to take our loans. I get a 200k degree for much less. shrug

We’ll see.
