How much can you a c t u a l l y improve?

I took SAT I this June, and here are my scores:

CR 620
Math 600
Writing 610 (E-9)

It was my first time taking them and I was only a sophomore, going into junior year this fall.

Is there anyway I can get them up to at least 2100? I didn't spend anytime preparing for them the first time, so I'm hoping that being a whole year older next spring along with ample preperation should help, but is a roughly 300 pt increase possible?!

By senior year, that’s surely possible. I went from a 149 PSAT sophomore year to a 190 or so PSAT junior year, and now I’m consistently scoring above 2100.

You have plenty of time, but do not leave it all for the last minute. If I were you, I’d try to raise those scores to that 2100+ range now so that you could have a good chance at becoming a National Merit Finalist or Semifinalist for the junior PSAT.

If you are willing to dedicate time and to work hard then anything is possible. Also I agree with ^, start prepping now for the PSAT. Quick question, why are you taking it in the Spring? The longer you wait, the less motivated you are unless you have an iron will. I am pretty sure if you search possible, sat, increase, you will receive many hits and a lot of advice! =) Good luck!

You can absolutely improve. Don’t listen to anyone that tells you otherwise.

I went from below a 2000 to over a 2300, in large part because of constant practice.

Decent scores TBH. Writing is very easy to improve in a small amount of time so I would suggest starting with that. Read SilverTurtle’s Guide (writing only). This will bring you into 700 land.

As for Math, a brilliant way to practice for the 800 is go to artofproblemsolving.com

At your level, take practice AMC8 and AMC10 (I got a 138/150 on AMC10).

For CR just read. read. read. Also, memorizing vocab is a good idea.

Hey ivytune. How long did this take you? How many practice tests did you take? What part of your practice would you say was absolutely imperative?

Well I was told by my counselor, who’s often very absent-minded that as a junior I should only take them in the spring and take the PSATs again in the Fall. I already took PSATs Fall of my sophomore year so I personally think it would be better to just take the SATs Fall of my junior year and if I don’t do as well I can take them a third time… or would that not look good?

If there’s any chance that you could qualify for a National Merit Scholarship, you need to take the PSATs fall of junior year, the only time those scores count for National Merit.

No reason to take SATs fall of junior year. I suggest taking them spring of junior year, which gives you more time to study for them and also gives you plenty of time to retake them if needed.

Usually SAT scores --CR+ math – go up a total of 100 points a year.

^Really? Does that apply to the ACT as well?

"Usually SAT scores --CR+ math – go up a total of 100 points a year. "
what kind of stat is that?
its different for everyone…
=/

^That’s actually a pretty good estimation. Also, note the use of the word “usually.”
