How much do first semester senior year grades matter?

thanks guys

alot. :)

It depends. yes, they always matter as a RD canidate, but they will mean even more if you are trying to portray a rising trend in GPA.

i have perfect gpa until this senior semester
shouldn't have taken so many tough ap classes

I got all A's senior year. I hope that it helps.

Well, I guess my more specific question was how much does it matter compared to the rest of your grades? At this point, they're probably reading essays and considering applicants from a holistic approach. Will they just look at the grades or actually do math with them?

It's terribly unfair that I happened to have an impossible teacher this year and couldn't get an A.

Well, if you consider Stanford's Answer to a FAQ... first semester senior year grades don't really matter in recalculation of your GPA. They only consider 10th and 11th grade (core classes) on an unweighted 4.0 scale. Going off of what they said in their FAQ, then I believe first semester will be looked at holistically.

Depends on what your senior schedule is, or your transcript...or whatever is in your application, there are certainly many different purposes a 1st semester senior transcript can have. Has the student improved his trend? Has the student, who has never taken an AP class before, done well with this workload? How has the student balanced his work with new leadership roles/jobs? Etc etc... Obviously, since I'm not in admissions, I don't know if these are the questions admissions hope to answer with 1st semester senior grades.

PeopleKnowMe, I don't know you or your school, but your statement is kind of immature. You're supposed to take AP classes to challenge you, not to enrich your 4.0. If you're regretting "tough ap classes" because it hurt your GPA, perhaps you should reconsider your candidacy at Stanford.

Student113, you'll have tons of teachers in college (or perhaps, in your senior year) who will make you feel like each and every class is impossible. There's nothing "unfair" about it. That's just real life, dude.

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH they better count alot!
I didn't work my butt off in 5 AP's and getting all A's for nothing >O
(i got deferred, hence the anger. heh)

i had perfect transcript...all As...except now I messed up...ended with a 89.7 in AP Calc...and my teacher doesn't round up...so I am stuck with a B+...this really sucks...

I have seen otherwise, as in other sections of the Stanford site they say semesters 3-6 for ED and 3-7 for RD are what count.

I got a B+ senior year, it didn't really matter.
I also got one Sophmore year and Junior year.

wait, so salik, you still got in with the B+?

You make it sound as if Salik has acheived the impossible.

I know several people who have gone on to top colleges with grades that don't even come close to straight-As.

that's assuming they have stellar ECs.. right?

Umm...I had three B's in two years, but only in first semester AP classes. It's very important to show that you have improved in a class from first to second semester. And no, I did not have "stellar" ECs, necessarily. Nothing at the national/state level at all. Just things that I was passionate about. That's really the most important thing as long as you have okay stats.

Don't worry about what has been done. You have presented yourself to the best of your ability, hopefully, on your application. One B isn't going to ruin your chances!!! And if you have been deferred, just keep on strongly presenting yourself on your update forms. ;) Good luck all of you!!!

thepapercrane,

No, that's assuming they can make themselves sound good on paper! ;)

argh.. haha, thanks :)
