i'm thinking about going to rice, but since i'm doing graduate school(med), i don't want to end up in $20000 in debt. anybody know any good cost cutting techniques? ppl have told me that working over the school year helps, but how much does that earn? also, if i board outside of my campus at rice, how much would that save me? and i also got full tuition to pitt, is it worth the extra $20000 to go to rice instead of pitt??? seriously, any sort of help would be nice...plz

Campus jobs pay $9-$12/hr. A full time summer job at Walmart will net you about $3,000. More money if you get anything better during summers.

For cost cutting, live frugally, buy books on internet way ahead of school start. You can use half.com or amazon market place, but try to avoid individuals. Individuals tend to exaggerate book condition. If you have dispute half.com is terrible in resolving it. amazon is very good.

If you are proactive and look up your syllabus book list early, there are often copies available in the library.

If your school offers undergrads the opportunity to become a RA sophomore year, consider doing this because the perks vary by school; some free room and board + stipend, some free room, my D's school, no free room but a 3,000 stipend,

At my school on-campus jobs start at minimum wage, $5.15/hour. Working 10-15 hours a week can help significantly, along with working during the summer.

Buy books online, get off of the school mealplan as soon as you can and buy groceries in bulk, eat out less, don't buy things you can borrow (books, movies), ask for things you need as gifts ($ for clothes, etc).

Also, make a budget. Know how you spend your money, and on what. Once you know that, you know where you can reduce spending and how much money you have before you run out.

Being an RA is a great deal, if you can get a slot. At many schools, fraternities are cheaper than dorms. Some schools have cooking dorms- no food plan, but community kitchens. That will save you money. Anything that you don't absolutely need to keep, you can sell around campus. I sold most of my text books the next semester. People think that they need them, but don't. You can always buy a supercheap physics text, borrow, go to the library, etc. Yes, working helps. I worked ten hours per week all the time. It does add up.

do you guys know how much that would make overall in a school year or the summer? as in, would that make 3000 or 2000 or what?

It depends on what your FA package looks like. yes you can make about ~$3000 over the summer working a job 40/ hrs a week at 8.50 TO $9 HR. Your work study at school, it depends on the work study allocation.
