How much does a D effect your transferring chances?

I got a D in english 1102 last semester because I missed the final exam, which was 25% of my grade. Last semester was my first semester in college, but I intended to finish this semester strong. If I maintain a 3.5-3.8 GPA and have B's and A's with only one D, will it affect my chances of going into a good university? (Georgia Tech or UGA) I am planning on retaking the D in the summer, and my current GPA is a 3.0 because I took 7 classes last semester. If I get all A's this semester, I will have a 3.49 GPA. Also, my college does not replace any grades.

If you re-take the course and do better, and if your grades and GPA are on an upswing upon your application dates, you should be all right.

I am in the same situation with you - I received a D in Calculus at my CC and I was still accepted at USC the following spring.

As long as schools see you work hard in your other classes, and take the incentive to repeat the course, you should be all right.

Best of luck.
