How Much Does a low GPA factor? Chance me and I'll chance back

Starting off high school was rough for me. My freshmen year GPA was a 2.5, sophomore 2.6, and junior year I was able to pull it up to a 3.5 bringing my current cumulative GPA to 2.9. These are all unweighted, being that I did not take any AP or honors classes until my senior year, which I am in currently and probably have a weighted GPA of around 4.0 unweighted 3.5. (I go to an academically rigorous college prep school, that does not even allow AP classes to be taken until junior year, and only by teacher recommendation.)

I'm not applying to any super selective schools, and some I'm auditioning for their theatre programs so I don't think (correct me if I'm wrong) that it will matter that much.

Other information:
I'm very artistic, and have passions in all art areas. I'm very indecisive, as seen by the many different schools and majors I'm applying for. A lot of schools I'm applying to are in New York state, because of my passion for NYC and my strong desire to get out of the deep south if I'm able to afford it.

Current Senior Schedule:
Honors World Lit
AP Environmental Science
Chorus
Finite Math
AP European History

SAT Super Scored:
640 CR
620 MT (610 if not super scored)
600 Writing

Some Community Service

Theatre/Music Resume

Good essay on how a false diagnosis at the end of my sophomore year made me try harder in school

College credit (B+) from UCLA in theatre

3 Teacher recs, 2 I know for sure are good

Schools I'm applying to without theatre auditions:
College of Charleston (music or drama, legacy)
University of South Carolina (drama, legacy)
Furman University (music or drama)
University of North Carolina Asheville (drama)
Fordham University (psychology)
SUNY Purchase (psychology)
Eugene Lang College of the New School (drama)
Savannah College of Art and Design (performing arts)
New York University (college of arts and sciences, dramatic literature/history/cinema)
Syracuse (fine arts, music history)

Auditioning:
Emerson College
Pace University
Ithaca College

As I said, I will chance you back, and I would also love any suggestions of schools... I've already applied to pretty much all of the schools listed (still working on UNCA, Syracuse, and Lang). Thanks in advance! :)

Thanks! Anyone else??? I’ll match back!

Thanks for the chance! I’m not very familiar with all the schools you’re applying to, but I’ll do my best!

College of Charleston: Probably a target. According to Collegeboard, your SATs fall within the median. And if your GPA is where you say it is, I believe you fall within the range. Plus, you have legacy there, so that’s definitely an advantage.

University of South Carolina: Your SAT scores for this school fall in the higher end of the median, and your GPA falls within the range as well. And again, you have legacy here, so probably a target or possibly safety (unsure).

Furman University: This would most likely be a target as well, since your SAT scores and GPA fall within their median ranges.

University of North Carolina Asheville:Target, for reasons stated above.

Fordham University: Probably target or very low reach, but most likely target.

Purchase: Considering Purchase’s stats, I’d say safety.

Eugene Lang: Target/safety. But I advise you to only attend if you’re absolutely sure that you’re going into drama. People say that the New School is good for the arts, but academically it’s not that wonderful.

Savannah College: Safety. Your SAT scores are above the median. I wouldn’t imagine that you’d have any difficulty getting in, unless their performing arts program is highly selective.

NYU: Probably a Reach.

Syracuse: As long as you’re not applying to the communications or journalism schools, I’d say you’d have a pretty good chance.

Emerson: Not sure

Pace: Not sure

Ithaca: Probably low reach

Ugh, I’m sorry. I don’t know much about the schools you are applying to, except for the ones that I’m applying to. But my opinion is kind of weird since I’m in that phase where I think everyone has become a super genius, and that I can’t get in anywhere. Bleh :(

But good luck! Don’t take all my opinions to heart! You surely have a chance at all the schools you are applying to!

"Syracuse: As long as you’re not applying to the communications or journalism schools, I’d say you’d have a pretty good chance. "

Oh wow, I was unaware the communications school was more selective… I put that /College of Arts and sciences on my intended major so I’d take classes from both schools… I feel like an idiot, I hope I still have a chance! I have already submitted my app so it’s too late to turn back.

But thanks for your detailed response, I really appreciate it! Yeah, it seems like a lot of people don’t know too much about the schools I’m applying to, but any more feedback from anyone will be greatly appreciated and returned!

For the arts, have you looked into cooper union/sva in NYC?

I found out yesterday that I got into SUNY Purchase. Really nervous about the last user calling College of Charleston a reach though… more chances will be appreciated and returned!

you have great SATs, your GPA sucks but it shows improvement. I think CofC is more of a match, maybe low-reach. i hope they know how rigorous your college prep school is, they might excuse a low GPA. good luck

Did you end up attending Purchase college? If so, what do you think of it?
