How much does one C in BC calc affect my chances?

So i got a 79 for my semester average.... i have As in all of my classes except for 1 B (89). I came from PreCal so I will not too prepared for BC but I wanted to challenge myself...will admissions see this?

will top colleges like yale, brown, and stanford disregard my application/look at my application badly because of this C or am I still in the running?

bummmpppppp

Depends on the whole package not just a single grade. However, make sure you do tell them about wanting to challenge yourself.

D is in exact same boat, although she may claw out a B. Straingt As up to this point. Fortunately she was just accepted EA at Gtown which while not her #1 choice is in her top 3, or 5. I dont think that one grade of C in AP Calc BC in an otherwise outstanding record will be a deal breaker. Not sure I’d even discuss it.

Mmm I’m not sure…many of the top people in my school who had near straight A’s/amazing SATs all got rejected from Yale ED. My high school is pretty tough, too, so this is saying something…

bump, anyone have more insight? I’m in the same boat. semester gpa’s still a 4.4 for me so thoughts on how much it affects chances if gpa is still decent? and should I bother explaining why in the additional comments section or will it just seem like I’m making excuses?

going for similar colleges, upenn, duke, johns hopkins, etc

I had a C in Calc II (BC equivalent) and put in an explanatory note into my application (mostly, I got lazy but learned my lesson). I got into schools like Columbia, Duke, Georgetown, Pomona, etc, (+ Harvard and Princeton waitlists) so I don’t think the C hurt me.

thank lolcats4, makes me feel better haha

but how can you explain??? Finding an excuse for a C or B- is pretty hard for me T_T

well, for me its that i went from precal to BC calc. and that i didn’t have to take it but chose to to challenge myself senior year. Trust me there aren’t too many seniors in this class…

I’m sure it’s fine.

One of my friends had similar grades in Calc BC (C+ first semester, C- second semester). She was accepted to top schools such as Emory, Vanderbilt, and Northwestern (and none of them rescinded her, so you can also stop worrying about that). I know those school are not quite as top-tier as Yale, Brown, and Stanford, but I imagine it won’t hurt you too much so long as you’ve kept your head above water in the rest of your classes.

^was she a recruited athlete??? or did she have any ‘‘big hook’’?

I want to know the answer too! I applied RD to Wash U and Rice, and I seriously think this C will get me rejected.

However, I don’t have a worthy explanation for this C… I don’t know what to say except that I just suck at calculus. At my school, we all directly go from precal to BC… only about 10 go to AB because they failed precal and are not allowed to take BC; I wasn’t allowed to “drop down” to AB because of my previous math grades.

everything averages out in the end. One bad grade is not the end. I’m in college and I failed an exam for my math and got a D on another exam. I went to see my professor and dept lots of time reading and trying to make up for my losses. Talk to your teacher about extra credit. I ended up with a B. You can recover.

As long as you’re not looking to be a mathematician, they’ll look at you as a student overall, and probably note that math isn’t your strongest subject. I think you’ll be fine, since the rest of your grades are stellar.
