How much time do you spend in your dorms every day in boarding school? And are laptops>desktops?
There are definitely more laptops than desktops.
Time spent in dorm rooms:
after classes till sports/dinner - around 2PM to 3PM or 5PM
mandatory study halls at some schools - 8:30PM-10:30PM
lights out till whenver you go to breakfast or not - 10:30PM to 6:30AM
thank you
also, how big are the dorms usually, and are there 2 desks in each?
No easy answer here. Really depends on the school. Even in the same school the size of room can depend very much on what dorm you are in. And honestly even then there can be huge variations is size of rooms. In our experience, every dorm should have a bed, dresser, closet and desk for each student.
If there are 2 students in the room, then yes. Each student will have a bed, desk, chair, and some place to put clothes (closet/dresser/chest). The size of the rooms varies, even within an individual school.
How much time you spend in the dorm can vary from student to student and even from term to term. One school we visited closes the dorms during the day (50% day students/50% boarding so everyone is on campus during the day).
It depends if you have free blocks during the day, how long they are and if you like to study in your room vs. library or common room. And for my son sometimes it depended on his roommate’s schedule/preferences. Many kids have laptops, but some still have desktops.
Agree that there is much variation in room size and type - single, double (1,2 or 3 room), some triples. Each will have a bed and desk/chair and someplace for clothing for each student. One year DS had a very large desk with two 3-drawer units in the desk instead of a traditional dresser. They each had a decently large closet with real doors, so he put his clothes in a drawer unit we supplied in his closet.
Room sizes can vary greatly! My kid and her roommate at SPS live in a room so small its referred to as the broom closet! While some of their friends have semi private bathrooms with two story rooms and walk in closets! She wanted Hogwarts, got the under-the-stairs closet
Raises hand – DD literally has the smallest room in her hall! Rooms on the third floor of the same building are gigantic with vaulted ceilings. She can look forward to a very nice single beginning next year.
As freshmen, D and her roomie had a HUGE room with 2 enormous walk-in closets and an extra closet. Sophomore year was a little smaller, and I thought last year’s room was the smallest but in fact, the room they got in their senior year lottery is a teeny one, with teeny closets and one teeny window… In the senior annex, a bit removed from the underclassmen. They don’t seem to mind… They think of it as " cozy".
