My familys income is under 20K (we have been four years in the US. We came as refugees.) I got accepted into the University of Michigan, and I am wondering how much financial aid should I expect?

Are you instate?

Are you a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (green card holder)? If not, the following might apply to you (from the UMich website).

Also check because some states have special cases for refugees or amnesty grantees. You may be allowed to pay in-state tuition and be treated like an in-state student for financial aid purposes if you have official refugee status. The best thing to do is call the financial aid office.

i am instate and i have the green card. also i qualify for citizenship in the next year. Sorry for leaving that out thanks for your help guys.

OK…final set of questions then…did you complete the Profile yet? You will also need to complete the FAFSA. Your EFC per FAFSA should be $0. Does MI have programs for low income students? You might want to check that as well.

I remember students posting that MI’s state awards have severely diminished within the last two years due to the economy there. They have something called TIP which covers tuition and fees for instate Medicaid recipients but I think it’s only for associate’s degrees. For federal aid, I believe the maximum Pell grant for next year is $5750. You’ll also be eligible for $5500 in Stafford loans (up to $3500 of that may be subsidized), and may receive a smaller Perkins loan (also subsidized) as well as some SEOG and federal work-study. Did you also apply for merit scholarships at UofM? What were your stats?

Submit FAFSA and CSS Profile as soon as you can after Jan 1st. Those who submit early are more likely to get the best aid…since some types of aid are very limited to those who apply early for aid.

You may need to call UM’s FA office to find out what kind of aid is available for an instate green card resident with a likely 0 EFC.

You need to also apply to a state university or two that can be your financial safeties…these can be schools that either you can commute to or will give you lots of merit for your stats.
