I am a sophomore in high school and this year has been a bit rough for me. Not rough as in I fail classes, but I went 3.16, 3.28, 3.85, and this quarter i'll probably get between a 3.3 and 3.8, not sure yet. I'm a good student and next year I'm doing full IB, i was just distracted this year and didn't have my priorities straight. So my question is, how much will these grades hurt me in the end?

ive been wondering the same thing--- you are really up and down but my gpa has been a bit low- i would like it to be higher- im in all the hardest classes but my UW gpa went 3.75, 3.65, 3.62 and ill prob get around 3.65 or low 3.7s this quarter--

my gpa is kinda low for an elite school but i know im way smarter than kids with 4.0's at other schools--

but in your case or mine-- how much will the grades hurt?

imo, that is a good GPA. I don't know if it will "hurt" you, though.

I had the same question. What if one year of your highschool you had some problems (ie home, financial ) and the issue affected your grades. Do colleges take that into account?

In general, sophomore year is very important. However, an upward trend is also seen as a good thing, and if there were legitimate circumstances surrounding a drop, colleges will also take that into account.

to the OP: If you do well every other year, have good test scores and good ECs, then your GPA will not kill you. Also, you do not express exactly what level of colleges you will be aiming for. For many, your grades are just fine. If you are intent upon the very top echelon of schools, then you will have to work a little harder on the other aspects of your application.

haha i've been thinking about this too! i took a crappy level 2 elective this year and i'm sure that colleges won't look very favorably at it. if you did really really well frosh year that may actually make you look bad...all i can say is work really hard junior year and colleges will see that you're improving. no one's perfect..i just hope colleges can realize that we make mistakes!

Sanders, why are you so arrogant. Coach Shamas even said his ballas at St. Antoine Prep in B-Port hit the books harder than Miles Lubin's wein** when he wins a science compeition.

Freshman arent viewed as really important. some schools even ommit those grades. Sophmores are important but its not the most important. Junior year is the most important so do well in junior year as schools will def see if u had an upward trend between Soph and Junior year.

miles way to represent uchicago-- fun dies there nice-- dude shamas is a great academiac-- TERPS-- coach shamas will drop the hammer on duke when he replaces roy williams at unc- hes a future hall o fame coach

Bad news: in general, sophomore year matters when universities compute your GPA.

Good news: if there is a legitimate reason for a drop in GPA, you can explain that in your personal statement.

Don't forget about the importance of grade trends, too. One year won't kill you.
