How much will my high school grades affect me?

So I'm considering transferring in a semester or two from Northern Michigan University. My college stats are strong: 3.88 GPA (just my Freshman year, I'm going to keep this up and probably transfer after next year), I won an award for an English paper, I'll be getting involved in clubs this coming year. I've got two internships on my resume, one in my field (International Relations) that's actually in India.

..And then there's my high school stats. My ACT is strong enough at a 29, but my GPA is LOW...2.6. High school I didn't give a damn about and I'm really hoping it's not going to come back to haunt me. Obviously I can't change anything now, but how much will this factor into me getting into a top tier school?

Everything depends on the college/university you apply to as a transfer. Some don’t give a rip about high school grades once you’ve finished a year or two of college. Others do.

You need to ask the transfer admissions office at each place on your list.

It might negatively affect you, but it also might not. Having high stats doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get in either. I would recommend that you write amazing application essays and let your personality shine through. Also write about how you’ve grown since high school since colleges seem to care more about upward trends than strict academic history.
