How should I approach my college essay?

In all of my AP and honors English classes, I've always been taught a certain style of writing so I can succeed on the state writing tests (I'm in NC, by the way) and the AP exam.

Now I'm applying for UNC at Chapel Hill, and I'm being asked to write 250-500 word essays and personal statements. I know exactly what I want to write about, but I'm not sure how to go about this. I'm in this research paper mindset at the moment where we write pages and pages of information, so I'm having some trouble getting my mind straight on this.

Is there a certain format? (i.e. should I use short paragraphs in the intro/body/conclusion format or should I just write one large paragraph which answers the question straight-up?) Are there any other tips you would recommend?

Thank you so much for any advice!

Honestly, I would write the way that feels right to you. The essay is supposed to represent you, so if you think a creative approach best represents you, then I would say go for it.

I don’t know if you need long introductory and conclusion paragraphs, if any, seeing as you only have 250-500 words.

Good luck!
