For the one that's supposed to tell them something about me, should I try to give them an overall view of who I am as a person or write about one trait that I think it notable about me? Do you think I should I focus on my personality/characteristics, or my accomplishments/activities?
I want to give them a good idea of who I am as a person but I feel like an essay that attempts to describe lots of different aspects of who I am would be cluttered and that an essay that's narrowed down to what I feel is my most important trait would seem more focused.

I wrote about one thing I like for 350 words.

I got in.

This essay is comparable to the 500 word “personal essay” on the Common App. Most people just use the same essay they used for other schools. Write about something specific that allows you to convey your personality. If you’re stuck, try using one of the Common App prompts.

Thanks for the responses :)

I’m hesitant to use my Common App essay, because I read that Georgetown doesn’t accept the Common App because it wants students to show that they’re REALLY interested in Georgetown, enough to apply with their application, and my essay, while I think it’s okay, is clearly a response to one of the Common App questions (specifically, the one that asks you to write about a historical figure/fictional character who inspires you) and I feel like they’d realize I just used my Common App essay and they wouldn’t like that- Georgetown is already such a reach for me and I want to make my essays as good as possible.

Do you know where I could find some “essays that worked” just to get an idea of the kind of thing that they’re looking for?

Mine was about myself as a person. It was like an explanation and analysis of who I was. I had to dig in deep and get this into writing, but it felt sort of cathartic to write. Idk if that helps, but it got me in EA. say what you want PERIOD!

I agree. Your common app essay would not fit. It focuses too much on someone else.

As you said in the original posting, talking about one aspect of your personality would be ideal. Just make sure it is actually a large part of your personality. For example, don’t try to write about how “earthly” you are because you volunteer at an environment center when you know damn well you leave the water running when you brush your teeth and waste a great amount of paper at home. (Not saying you actually do, I’m just using it as an example :)).

Unfortunately I don’t know about any place online that shows successful Georgetown essays, but try to get feedback from adults who don’t know you that well in your life.

My essay is about how important my mother is in my life and how I felt watching her when my grandfather died, do you think that would fit the prompt?

@disgaeagod21 You essay choice could work but by the way how you phrased it makes it sound like the essay is about your mother and colleges want to learn more about you, not your mom or your granddad. Sure you can still talk about your mom and you granddad but maybe you can include what you did during this family crisis. Did you take on more household chores? comfort your mother? did you do certain things to brighten your day? overall college want to see the good qualities of you.

BTW i used my common app essay for my georgetown essay because it describes me as a person and how I overcame adversary. Georgetown does not care if you use your common app essay…they do not read your common app…
