How should I talk to my school counselor about.....?

I want to talk to her about setting goals in high school. I'm a freshman and I want the guidance if I'm taking the right classes or not. Also, I would like her to know what my top university choice is so that she can direct me to their requirements. Would that be too bold?

No…It maybe weird going into your guidance counselor’s office for the first time, but part of a guidance counselor’s job is to listen and provide guidance. Plus, they know what are best things for you to do if you have a certain goal in mind.

You really shouldn’t be talking to your counselor about college if you’re a freshman…it’ll just make you seem over-obsessive about getting into your favorite school…which is not really the kind of attitude you want reflected in your recommendations.

maybe at the end of the year…

You should go for it! It definitely won’t make you seem college obsessed, it will make you look motivated. Just make an appointment if you have to and start telling him/her about yourself. You should let them get to know you as a person. I did this last year when I was a freshman too. Now my guidance counselor and I are pretty close :)

you should be fine. my own guidance counselor thinks I’m college obsessed and gets upset when I try to talk about these things with her, but she’s in the minority. every other counselor I met thinks I’m motivated, or at least tries to help me.

Why not ask your questions on college confidential?

When I was a kid, my high school counselor told me that I should probably just go to community college.

I wound up getting degrees from Cornell, Michigan, and Georgetown.

So I am not sure if the advice of your high school counselor is worth that much.

Many are overworked. Many may not care that much.

I honestly think you will get better suggestions from CC, from kids who have recently gone through the process.
