We are still waiting to hear from some school who will not send out their letters until mid March. I know Maryland will be sending out scholarship award letters starting in mid March as well.

Is it ok to wait until early April to decide or is it better to decide now and will that increase your scholarship chances?

I’m pretty sure that confirming early would not increase your scholarship chances.

What is important is confirming housing. If there’s a chance that you’ll attend UMD, you need to get your name in the hopper for housing requests. I don’t know how they are doing it this year, but the last couple of years, you were able to request housing without paying the deposit for enrolling at the school. (When DD1 started, you had to pay the deposit before you could request housing). Housing assignments are made in priority order by the date you confirm housing. DD1 waited until late in April, as she was waiting to hear from a couple of “those” schools that don’t tell you until late. As a result, she was in a triple her freshman year in Denton…both of her roommates had been in the same situation as she was…they were all very late to confirm (April 29, I think).

However, confirming early has nothing to do with your scholarship chances. I don’t think the scholarship people would even bother to check to see if you’d paid the deposit that meant you’d confirmed…and it’s certainly not something they consider when offering $$.
