how to choose where to live

IU is top choice for my son. He will be a senior. We have been reading posts about the crazy atmosphere in McNutt, but he will be a business major. Will the LLC in McNutt calm the craziness? Or do you request a FIG or an academic community? Some noise is ok, but constant party mode will most likely not be a good fit for him. Any thoughts? Patio

My daughter is going to be a freshman in the Kelley LLC (McNutt Crone) this year, so I’ll let you know what it’s likely once she’s been there a few months. So far they’ve done a nice job of creating an online community for the students who will be the first KLLC residents and it seems like a nice group of kids, but time will tell.

patio: Calcruzer is the ultimate source for everything IU; you may want to send him/her a PM

I don’t think you can go wrong with Central. Your son will still be very close to Kelley and in a less hectic environment than NW.

The Kelley Learnng is in one dorm which is McNutt/Crone this is basically a separate dorm. I would say this will not be more focused than before. McNutt area is very close to the Business Building but more important a lot of business classes are held in McNutt, making it very nice in the winter.

Patio,

It sounds like you are getting a lot of good advice on here already. If your son qualifies as a Kelley school (business) direct admit, then I’d suggest you wait and see what Tulare tells you with respect to the McNutt-Crone LLC this year.

If you don’t expect your son to qualify as a Kelley direct admit, or if he is not a business major, then I’d take Oz’s advice (along with cheesewiz’s comments) and opt for a location in Central. It is less likely to be a party area, but is still close to the Main library and student union and business and psychology buildings.

The problem is that the non LLCs in McNutt tend to be in that dorm because they DO want to “party”. For that reason, I’d suggest a bit less hectic dorm would one of those in the “Central” neighborhood.

Oh, and cheesewhiz says that many business classes are held in McNutt–but I think there are actually more classes (especially freshman classes) offered at the Foster Quad. Foster is right across the street from McNutt, though. This is one more reason why waiting to hear from Tulare about the Kelley LLC students in McNutt is worthwhile.

One last thing–rodney says I’m the “expert” on all things IU-B. Well, I do know a little bit about the school, but that’s only because I’ve been on the site for four years or so. However, I think that you can see that bthomp1 and rrah and maxcellis and cheezwhiz and IllinoisMom2006 already know a lot more than me about many aspects of the school. I learn stuff from them everytime i read their posts.

cal: ok,ok…I’ll keep them in mind as well…

Thanks for all the replies soooo far. My son should qualify for direct admission to Kelley. I look forward to Tulare’s news this fall.

Calcruzer has given us all VERY GOOD ADVICE!!!

Thanks Calcruzer

^^^Calcruzer, as we do from you! That is what makes this site so valuable. Each contributer knows a lot about a particular area, but no one knows it all. I know more about Kelley now than I ever would have otherwise. DD won’t be in Kelley, and I sure wasn’t in Kelley. As the movie or Oprah or whomever said, “pay it forward.”
