Hi,
I just recently submitted my 5 applications for 5 boarding schools, and since then, I have felt very nervous; with much more free time on my hands, it is much easier to worry about if I should’ve written something instead of another, and what the admissions team thinks of me. Do you have any tips to fight this anxiety?
Exercise. Go for a run. Get your mind off it.
@jade234 Others may disagree but we focused on the following with our child. We listed all the benefits to staying in local school. They ranged from more disposable income for other things: outside classes, travel, but namely money that could be spent on college offering more choices at that time; not having to share a room; local friends; less rigidity with regard to dorm and campus rules about coming and going; fewer required activities ie in BS you may have to play a sport every term or take gym or health. Easier to stand out academically ETC. We listed all of the benefits to going which I assume you already know. I guess I would approach it like it will be an embarrassment of riches to have a choice/choices to go to BS but it will be a different type of blessing to stay local. For us it was good either way.
Well, it’s out of your hands. Read a book, go for a walk or see a friend. Mark Twain said, I’ve had a lot of worries in my life most of which never happened. So think positive!! And realize you cannot be refused unless you apply. You applied and that is great!
ugh I have the same problem this is mentally exhausting, at least by working on applications they kept you busy but now everything is out of our control!!
M10 will come sooner than you think. Focus on school, sports, instruments or a hobby to keep yourself occupied.
i feel you! with (most of, excluding the later deadlines) the stress of applications lifted off my shoulders, i confess i’ve been feeling oddly empty? people around me have commented on how i seem upset or quieter than usual, but i guess it just happens?
either way, i’m burying myself in netflix (as a treat) and pushing myself more in sports + academics to fill that oddly reminiscent part of me, i do hope m10 comes soon!
Our family did a fun fact for the day…everyone had to find some random fact about something (didn’t matter what) that was strange or practically unbelievable. Then we’d present them at dinner. It caused us to use down-time to find the strangest facts they could and then of course, once they were all presented, we’d have crazy talks about them. Made the days go by easier and took our minds off things. Bonus…we could probably make bank at jeopardy now! :))
You could start a thread on cafe…it may help pass the time for many people and who knows what kind of strange things you could learn!
Drown it out in seasonal home-made baked goods! Kidding. Mostly. I’ve been trying to focus on pleasantly distracting hobbies. For me that’s theatre and painting, but a friend of mine says that when he feels especially nervous about M10, he tries to go out for a jog. Good luck!
Enjoy reading how everyone’s doing, but I suspect the #1 best way to reduce anxiety is to take a break from college confidential until just before M10, at which point nothing will really help.
If anyone out there is having second thoughts about how many schools they applied to… there is still time. There are many amazing BSs ( in the Top 30 ) that have an app deadline of 1/31. Just throwing it out there just in case! All the best and good luck!!
That’s true @PhotographerMom and St George’s is one of them! My son is so happy there. Feel free to PM me if anyone has questions…
Love SGS but…Please stop telling people @ SGS!!! We don’t want too much competition (LOL!!!)…hoping DD has a chance!!! Let everyone else on CC gush over PEA & PA!! These people on CC have such a narrow view of BS! :x
St Mark’s School (Groton’s rival) is another! DS LOVES SMS! Y’all can PM me, too, if you have any questions!
Great hockey @SMS too ^:)^
LOL @Golfgr8 ! Considering how much I like the place, I think I’ve been pretty quiet about SG…
@GMC2918 very true! Of course, you’re quiet about your Cali school, too, until someone asks! And I’m trying to keep that one hush hush, since my DD will apparently be applying there, soon!!
I feel like I’m giving away a closely guarded secret : http://www.boardingschools.com/find-a-school/quick-lists/fixed-date-application-deadline
Gasp! @PhotographerMom how could you!?!?!
Brentwood school in Canada has rolling admissions =((
