How to do the common app fee waivers work?

Hello,

I’m applying through the common app and checking the fee waiver box. Is this handled automatically, or do I need to get a fee waiver signed by a counselor and mail it to the schools?

thank you

I’m still confused as to whether there’s an electronic component to it (like if they send our advisor an e-mail to verify), but all of my schools asked that you have a brief, signed statement on your current college’s letterhead verifying your financial need sent to them. I had a professor write mine.

Check the requirements each school you’re applying to lists on their transfer page.

Bump,

I really need some advice, I have no clue how to go about getting fee waivers for schools.

I would really appreciate some help.

Thank you

i had this same question like two weeks ago, so i contacted the Common App.
they said that they would usually email the counselors that you had on your common app for verification.
however, I asked my counselor and they said that they didn’t get the emails.
so what I did was I went to my financial aid office and asked them for a letter of proof showing that the app fees would prove to be a financial hardship, along with the letterhead and etc. Afterwards, I emailed the letter to the transfer offices of each colleges, and they accepted it.
hope this helps!

oh woops, made a mistake. that verification purpose applies to high school students and not transfers:

correction:
the common app do not email your counselors that you put on your common app for verification. they pretty much just let the college do what they want with the info of you requesting a fee waiver.

most colleges accept the NACAC fee waiver (but most want you to complete option #2, which is pretty much just the letter from financial aid office.)

Ok, so what I was able to do is use my FAFSA as part of my proof that I am in need of a fee waiver. UT-Austin asked me to submit documentation so I sent them my student aid report and it was good. My EFC is also 0 so maybe that is why.
