As I was reading through my short answer essays on the Common App, I realized that I forgot to include a few words in one of them. I tried emailing brown admissions and ask if they could fix my mistake but received an automated email telling me to “upload my Update” and any other supplements to the Brown Applicant Portal. Should I try contacting them again? Would it come off as needy or obsessive? Would admissions even consider fixing a mistake on an essay?
Why would they let you fix essays? If you made a mistake in reporting test scores or something that would be different but these are the essays. They were due November 1.You weren’t submitting a rough draft. Why would it be fair for you to fix them? Sorry to be harsh, but if you cared enough you would have proofread your essays before submitting. Also, don’t read your application after you submit it! Stop reading your essays–there’s nothing we can change now. Forget about it and wait til December 15. No use reading and rereading something you can’t change. The application is submitted.
edit. lol just noticed your user name is “Reckless.” very fitting.
Also, don’t stress out about this. Sure, it may hurt you, but if you are rejected it won’t be because of a few typos.
First, I think the previous poster is being unduly harsh. One hopes s/he has no typos in his/her application. Although I do agree that everyone should stop rereading their ED applications at this point.
Secondly, this question literally comes up hundreds of times each year. It’s not a big deal. If colleges, including Harvard, rejected every applicant with a typo, they would not be able to fill their class.
Chill. Read the “clam fart” thread here. He was accepted.
@skieurope ok, sure I may be harsh but these types of questions are the worst. I mean, what makes you think you will be able to edit essays after they are submitted? Like my goodness everyone makes typos but if you’re missing whole words then that’s your problem. And, like I said, it’s no big deal. You’ll be fine, just stop thinking about it and move on. Again, if you are differed/rejected in December it won’t be because of a couple of typos!!
And yeah, I did find one typo in my common app essay–meant to say “over time,” said “overtime.” Whoops. But my common app essay was exactly 650 words so I fixed it for future applications but had to delete a word. Just laugh it off! I’m not obsessing over this typo because it’s OK. Admissions realizes you’re human and you might gloss over typos when you proofread. Heck, I had multiple people read this essay and no one caught that mistake. Repeat after me: I’ll be fine.
Go watch a movie, read a book, do homework. The deed is done. Forget about Brown until December 15.
“deferred”
ahem
@suzy100 well, I didn’t have months to write that post like we had months to work on our essays.
ahem
@sciencenerd123 I am not questioning what you said, but rather how you said it. The green box at the top of each page lists the forum rules, which say “Our forum is expected to be a friendly and welcoming place, and one in which members can post without their motives, intelligence, or other personal characteristics being questioned by others.”

@skieurope Guess I could have phrased things differently but I think it’s important to get a reality check once in a while. Yes, it’s unfortunate that mistakes were made in the application but we shouldn’t obsess over these things. It’s for the poster’s own good. We must realize that we’re not perfect and we make mistakes and that’s completely ok!! It won’t make very much of a difference in the end so it’s a waste of time to stress out over it.
I don’t think the question posted by the OP is “the worst”-- any more than the threads posted by anyone else on this thread or this forum.
OP, it’s not a big deal. If your applications have been submitted, it’s time to start hunting down scholarships, not worrying about the applications.
