Well my son applied to W&L Early Decision, was deferred, and now has been waitlisted. He has visited the campus several times, did have an interview, has attended local information sessions with admissions, has sent a letter updating his activities, and has placed a call to the Ass't Dean of Admissions to express his continued interest in attending. Are there any additional things he can do to improve his chances of getting in off the waitlist?

He was recruited to play Division I Lacrosse at West Point, but has recently had his letter of appointment recinded due to a medical disqualification. The W&L Lacrosse coaches took a look at him in the fall, but only had one graduating senior on the team and couldn't offer any help with admissions. W&L has always been his first choice, but we just don't seem to be able to get him in. The frustrating part is that we've been following a thread of a current W&L student that is trying very hard to get in to West Point -- wish they could get together and just trade admission offers.

My son and daughter both attended summer camps near Lexington and they have always enjoyed the W&L campus. We would appreciate any advice from those who have successfully gotten in of the Wait List!

The only thing you can do at this point is continue to show continued interest (which clearly you have done) and hope and wait.

BTW, the current W&L student trying to get into West Point (I assume youre referring to skirby) got in and last I heard is trying to decide whether to stay or go.

Best of luck to your son!

Dima343:

Thanks for response! We will continue to let Admissions know that W&L is his top choice. Glad to hear skirby got into West Point and I am sure it is a tough decision on whether to leave W&L.

The only other avenue we haven't pursued yet is to contact Coach Cerino again to let him know that Tyler is on the waitlist and would still love a chance to compete for a spot on the Generals Lacrosse team.

We were also wondering whether another visit to W&L to meet with Admissions would be of any benefit.

Anyway, thanks for the excellent advice and the great support you have provided on this forum.

I would think that another visit could only help. I've always heard that sustained interest is an important factor at W&L. However, I don't have any specific information about the wait list.

Although my son liked W&L, he made the decision to not accept their offer of admission so hopefully someone will move off of the waitlist. Best of luck. It certainly is a trying time.

And to Dima343, thanks for all the insight on W&L. As a graduate of the NYC school system, you've done well...though you had a distinct advantage since you graduated from Stuyvesant. I went to Brooklyn Tech so I appreciate the difficulty of the school and dedication it took to get through four years there. The greatest skill you have is probably the ability to figure out how to go from place A to B without a car and with minimal outside help. It's a skill that's done wonders for me and most high school students no longer attain. When I was at Tech, we lost 1/2 of our entering freshman by the time graduation rolled around. Best of luck at Washington and Lee, and again I appreciated your insight.

Thank you for the compliments, Stuyvesant has indeed helped prepare me for college and the world better than anything else, and for that I will be eternally grateful to the school (now I can see why so many Stuy alums give it so much money). Being able to get anywhere without a car is indeed an important skill and has served me well here in Lexington (though my friends make fun of me being practically the only American student here without a license).

Congratulations to your son, I hope he is happy and successful wherever he has decided to go.

Are international students eligible for an American driving license? Any idea?

Yes - look up your state DMV for more info

I have to echo what everyone else has been saying-- keep showing continued interest, and update them with any significant accomplishments. Good luck!

Disregard that post-- I just read the other thread that mentioned the acceptance. Congrats!
