How to get into UCSB

i was wondering if i have a chance of gettint into Santa Barbara i have a 3.50 GPA
SAT:
430 reading
420 math
470 writting (this was my first time and i am going to retake them)

i am in clubs and swim at my school
i calculated the UC eligibility and my score was 273.
Should help me get into uscb besides the essay

Compared against admitted students this past year, your:
GPA is .54 points below average,
SAT score is about 500 points below average
Since UCSB isn’t lacking students, your UC eligibility is not going to help you much. Definitely to Merced. Maybe to UCSC and UCR but definitely not UCSB.

Feel free to interpret the information given however you want.

I hope you study before the next SAT. You need to improve by 150+ in each subtest. Your GPA is borderline make sure you have covered your A-G courses covered.

unfortunately, your stats are woefully inadequate for even consideration to UCSB. hopefully you can improve your SAT scores a lot and GPA a little. If not, if you were shooting for a good school on the beach, SDSU is a more appropriate fit, i believe, and even other state schools (not bagging on state schools, but their admissions standards are much less stringent than that of the UC’s).

Probably not. :frowning: Work on your SAT and definitely your GPA if you’ve got time.

do some work, aim for a 3.8, and study for your SAT retake. also, take the ACT.

what are some other cal state or uc universities to consider?

Santa Cruz, Riverside, Merced, basically any of the CSUs except maybe SDSU and Cal Poly SLO. But there are a lot of great schools to consider in the CSUs. Maybe look into Northridge, Fullerton, and Chico?

Or if you really want to go to UCSB look into Santa Barbara City College and do TAG or whatever. Good luck. :)

i think i calculated my GPA wrong i have a UC gpa of 3.7 what if i retake the ACT, what should i get? Am really sorry to keep insisting but i want to be in the best path to get into UCSB.

back in the days, I got in with a 3.7 and a 18xx SAT score. I’m not going to tell you that you won’t get in with those scores anymore because you can. You just need some spectacular reason why you should get in or you’re recruited for sports.

However, assuming you don’t have an amazing track record in high school, you probably won’t get in with my scores anymore. Increased competition and lower budgets killed it.

If your GPA is sorta low, you gotta have a high SAT/ACT score

go to assist.org and see what CSU’s there are, and most of them you should be able to at least be a high candidate. realy work hard this year and reach for the schools you want to go to.

howver you should be into a lot of the regular CSU’s and also UC’s such as UCSC, UCM, UCR.
i say go visit schools that you are interested in and apply like mad crazy. options are key when it comes time in april.

ps SBCC students live and act just like the UCSB students…they party the same places and live the same places too. so if you are set on UCSB, then SBCC is a good choice cuz its right there, and you can transfer in 2 years if you work hard.

don’t be discouraged, JUST APPLY! you’ll never know if you’ll get in if you don’t. My stats weren’t all that, but I’m admitted for fall 2010 and my stats were:

3.6 gpa
SAT: 1780
580 CR
480 M (gah)
720 W
good essay and ecs

UC admissions can be pretty random though, cause there’s some people with stats like mine and better who didn’t get in.

just work on your SAT to increase your chances. you have until the November (or December?) date to take it, so use this time wisely. Write a killer essay and you’ll be in the running.

Apply to some CSUs, privates, and other UCs, and like I said, don’t be discouraged!!

The thing that you want to look at it is: “How do your grades and SAT scores compare with the other students in your high school who apply to UCSB?” You will be compared to the other kids in your school. So, you if you have a 3.5, but if the average GPA of students who apply from your school is 4.0, then you may have a problem. On the other hand, if you have a 3.5 GPA and the average GPA of kids applying from your HS is 3.4, then that places you in a better position.

My son was admitted from the waitlist with an SAT score of 1950, ACT of 29, 8 AP classes and a GPA of 3.9 and lots of ECs. 135 kids applied from his HS (35 were accepted) and the average accepted GPA was 4.1. When he got to orientation, he found that kids from other schools had a GPA of 3.5 and had taken only 1 AP class.

Your GPA will be calculated for admission from the A-G classes that you took in your Sophmore and Junior years. They will take your weighted GPA from these 2 years in those classes.

One boy from my son’s class had a 4.3, tons of APs and an ACT of 32 as well as perfect scores on the SAT2 in Chemistry, Physics and Calculus among others. He was in the top 5% of the class of 450. This is a high performing school, so when he applied to MIT, Dartmouth, Carnegie-Melon, etc. he was competing with 5 other students who were just like him and those schools only took ONE student from the school. He did not get into any of his first choice schools. He ended up at Berkeley, but it was his back-up school.

You can also plug your stats in on the college board website for UCSB and you can see where you fall on the spectrum. Try to get your test scores up as the UCs place alot of weight on GPA and test scores. Good Luck:) Also…write a killer essay.
