I am currently a high school junior, wondering what I can do to have better admission chances to UT Austin and other universitys.
Weighted GPA: 3.945 (Off of freshman and sophomore year)
Rank: 57/614 (Off of freshman and sophomore year)
Current GPA with first semester of junior year: 4.143
Other stuff: Currently in National Honor Society, Doing Accounting UIL, Only about 25 hours of community service.
Make sure your taking the most difficult classes available at your school and get a good SAT score and I think you’ll be fine. It would be good for you to take it upon yourself to have another time commital EC like club leadership, job, weekly community service your involved in, or whatever works best for you.
Not sure if it is a good news to you or not, but UT-Austin doesn’t look at GPA. However, instead, they look at class rank. So, you should try to raise your class rank and check it periodically.
UT-Austin is a tough school that also accepts a lot of in-state students (approximately 90% of undergrads are in-state), so, if you are an OOS student, unless you have solid stats, it will be certainly difficult to get in.
@HardOREasy I was not aware of that, in that case it’ll definitely be hard if your not in Texas.
If you are OOS I wouldn’t even bother applying. Also I think rank is only relevant for instate kids. Really look at the threads about OOS admits.
You are off to a great start to get in. Keep doing well in classes, develop leadership and demonstrate it, and do well on your Test scores. In many ways easier for OOS kid to get in than instate. I have had all my kids get in OOS, and only one had a weighted gpa over 4.0. One child gotin with a 27 ACT. Keep working hard, and you will succeed…And don’t ask on these threads about chances. It will make you crazy. Look at Naviance, call your local admissions rep, and just apply. And don’t lock your sights to just one school…
I am in state. I know that rank will be around top 7% for automatic admission when I will be applying. I’m taking 4 AP classes right now and Pre-AP PreCal. I’ve been starting to look at schools, just wanted to get an idea of other things I can do to help me have better chances of getting into different places. Thanks, I appreciate the info!
@kd1021 which major are you doing? How did you do on your PSAT?
Do work close to your major and keep it up with and clubs or organizations you’re in. Try to move up into leadership positions
Getting into McCombs would be great, but I know that they are pretty selective. I made a 1070 sophomore year and an 1140 on the PSAT this year.
@kd1021 You will HAVE to get that SAT score up
psat score = your actual sat score minus roughly 100 points or so. it looks like you’re going to hit the 1250 range on the real sat. i think that because when i took the psat i got like a 1100ish and the real sat i got 1200ish felt like performance was same on both. took both about 5 months apart definitely bring that up to a good 1300 or more
@kd1021 Consider studying for the test from Princeton Review, Barron’s, and Kaplan.
They helped me increase by score from 1420 to 1560 on the new SAT
Try to make the top 7% cut, get 75+ hours of community service before you are a senior, get a few leadership title of clubs, make a club if you have to, give it a fancy name and boast your resume as much as possible. Also, try to have a sat of over 1300(roughly their average) and your chances will be great.
