I want to get accepted into the University of Florida. I'm only a sophomore now..I kinda messed up freshman year.

I was taking four honors classes in freshman year..I didn't do to well so my gpa was a 2.583 unweighted/3.250 weighted.

In sophomore year I only took one honors and one AP, but for the first two quarters I got 2 As and 4 Bs each quarter, which raised my gpa to 2.83/3.44. Then in the third quarter I got straight A's, and I have mostly As this quarter, so my gpa should be even higher when they calculate it again at the end of the year...

Next year I'm taking two Aps and three honors, and I've become a serious student again and hope to continue getting the grades I'm getting right now.

maintain grades. you have time.
do you mean you got 52, 55 and 65 on the PSATs? that's not bad.
do something that interests you and shows your passion over the summer.
also, maybe look at more AP courses? I don't know about your school and I know my school barely offers APs and most people aren't allowed to take them.

UF is getting harder and harder to get into.

My friends are in contact with an admissions officer we met when we visited (we're jrs from South FL) and she recommends taking as many AP classes you can. My friend asked her if Calc Honors would be better than AP Psych, which to me was a silly question (Calc is challenging, while AP Psych is known to be the easy AP) and she said to take the AP.
Also, UF recalculates your GPA, its like this:
4.0 for an A in a regular course
4.5 for an A in an honors course
5.0 for an A in an AP course
and the other letter grades decrease by .5, and they only calc core courses-math, english, foreign lang, science, and social studies. If you have a list of all of your grades, you can actually recalc your GPA yourself to see where you fit in on their scales.

Are you in state? That obv. is a huge aspect of UF admission. Hope I helped!

I am in state, and yeah you did help. I now know my chances are even worse lol..oh well. I'm Hispanic though..I'm not sure if that will help...I hope so?

Yea it will help but not that much. a 2.5 is really not great. ur gonna have to really work hard ur junior year to show them that u changed. do great on ur SAT scores. Have u considered at least to other schools just in case?
Suggestions?

University of Miami: its more expensive but ranking wise its almost the same. since its a private school their not so much GPA/SAT strict. they look at everything so u might have a tad bit better chance.

Florida State: its the 3rd best school in florida and it would be the easiest of the three schools. Campus wise, it looks similar to UF. UM looks more of a lush tropical 5 star resort.

yes it does.
and... well, AP PSYCH IS AWESOME!!!
i never took the course but i read the book and talked with friends and did all the other reads. its amazing. (can't take the AP by myself though. :( darn.)

It's a 2.853 right now, and I got straight A's last quarter and they haven't calculated that in yet, so it should be a 3.0 unweighted by the end of the year. Hopefully.

Yeah those schools are also schools I'm planning on applying to, along with UCF. Isn't UCF the third best? I'm not sure lol

And I wanted to take AP Psychology for next year, but my class was the last sophomore class to do subject selection so there was no more room =/

THANK YOU MAN, FINALLY SOMEONE WITH LOWER THAN A 3.0 GPA. People here all have atleast a 3.9 gpa and it drives me nuts. Anyways, gl bringing ur gpa up. Mine is currently right next to yours....But Ima try get atleast a 2100 SAT. It's not hard, you just have to focus.

Ppl say that SAT's don't count that much, but for some colleges they count a lot because they base it on your gpa. You still have a chance, just do better on the SAT. atleast 650 on each section. Best way to raise it up is by doing practice tests and learning from your mistakes.

Those are the better schools in Florida. I didnt mention New COllege of Florida cause its not really imo a major school in Florida. IF I where u I would apply to FSU, UF, UM, UCF, USF (even though out of all the 8 schools i got accepted to, USF had defered me) :D

By the way, UCF is actually very close to beating FSU. If FSU keeps on going at the same pace, UCF (with its already more complicated admissions standards than FSU) might actually surpass FSU. 3rd tier school i think means from #110-180

Yeah, I agree to try for FSU and UCF. And being a minority helps as well! Going by your PSAT scores, you will be able to get at least the 75% Bright Futures scholarship, which makes UM not worth the money in my opinion. Then again, I don't want to go to college 30 mins from home!

I would also suggest doing something meaningful with your summers- volunteering with a non-profit organization, doing a summer college program, or activities that tie into your interests and extra curriculars. I have heard that schools look at continuity- continued activities throughout your high school career- because these show your commitment.

At my school we have BRACE counselor who is basically a guidance counselor
that only deals with college. She has been really useful to me and the ones in FL tend to know a lot abt what the FL schools are looking for, so see if your school has one and if it does I would make an appt.

ok the best thing right now you can do is
stack up on aps and do your best
study hard for sat
try and get your gpa from a 3.25 to a 4.0
that means youll have to work twice as hard junior year but still do it
and yes, your ethnicity will help you but only a little

I don't see UCF overtaking FSU anytime soon. FSU is one of the state's flagship schools. Especially after the state budget get reduced due to fewer and lower sources of income and emphasis on K-12.

Definitely work on your SAT because your GPA will more than likely be below average for UF.

Also, a word of advice - make sure you have your two foreign languages done by the end of your junior year. According to the admissions officers that I spoke with, they view filling that requirement late as a major disadvantage.
