I have been working at the same summer job for the past five summers ( a daycare facility) and have always had a great experience with them. I sent in my final day paper and marked down that my final day would be Wednesday August 23rd. Unfortunately, I have been having health issues as well as issues with my family that require me to travel a bit. The family issue happened quite suddenly. I need to tell work (or my boss) that I need to move my final day of work to either this Thursday or Friday as next week I now have to be out of town.
Typically, I would be okay doing this but staffing has been super tight and I feel that I am letting them down almost but the situation is out of my control. My friends and family say that I shouldn’t worry about leaving work earlier and that they will handle it. My mother even said " Well let’s say you somehow ended up in the hospital and couldn’t show up. Work would still go on without out you and they would figure it out." I still feel guilty but I need to take care of myself and my family at this time especially before school starts. Help please!!How do I approach my boss about this?
If you can stay until Friday, that would probably help them out, since it is a daycare. Tell your boss ASAP, saying that you have to leave the position early to deal with a health issue. (Properly trained managers will not ask what it is.) Tell them how much you have enjoyed working there and that you look forward to next summer, if that is the plan.
It’s great you’re so conscientious, but this is beyond your control. My daughter is a camp counselor at a local YMCA, and several staff members have had to quit early for various reasons. Just part of life.
At this point the best thing you can do is to 1) tell them the truth ASAP and let them know that this was unplanned and 2) offer to stay as long as you can.
Thank you so much for all your responses. I know that my boss will be totally understanding of my situation but still it feels like a let down. I plan to tell my boss first thing tomorrow morning when I go in so I just get it over with and stop stressing about it and also let my boss begin scheduling other plans.
