How to prepare for the SAT

I need some help to figure this out.

I will be applying to universities in fall '08.

Test dates:

March 1, 08 (sat only).
May 3, 2008 (sat&subject tests)
June 7, 2008 (sat&subject tests)

What dates should I take the tests?

What preparation books are the best?

Thanks so much.

take it June, master the CollegeBoard guide to the SAT(the big blue book). Master their practice tests. AND GET A FREAKING 2400!

Do you think that is all I need?

I've read that one should have many books. True, false?

Depends. I personally have never been a big reader. Reading 200 pages on the sat is probably the dumbest thing I could spend my time doing. But some people religiously read every single book about the SAT. If you're going to use it and read it, then I guess true. But that also depends on how many is many. I honestly dont think you need more than 5 books tops

Are you done with SAT 2's cos thoses are usually taken in june right after someone finishes usually an ap class in that subject. So maybe u hve to take the SAT earlier

Is your name jaan? Are you from south asia by any chance? Does jaan mean life by any chance? Do you have a 1987 nickel by any chance?

btw which colleges accept those sat testing dates for fall 2008???

I would definitely get more than just the CB book. It only has tests, not strategies. It helps to get tips on how to beat the SAT (instead of beating your head against a wall, haha). So the CB is a must for practice, but also get Cracking the SAT. It has the best tips IMHO. The tests are also really good, with answer explanations, which the CB tests don't have (I really don't enjoy beating my head against a wall). There's also 11 Practice Tests which are good if you still want more tests, but don't get it until you see how you're doing on the other ones. You might or might not need more practice. I, a standardized testing bonehead, need all the practice I can get!!!

Those dates are all fine for applying in the fall, but you can't take SAT I and SAT II tests on the same day. You can do just SAT I or up to three SAT II tests in one day, so plan on that. You can take tests in the fall also, just as long as your test is at least a month or so before the app deadline.

i'll start uni in fall 09 so applications are fall 08 for me.
thanks for all the input.

were I to take the SAT I in march and get it over with - if i start studying now will that give me enough time to score 2200+?

Hard to say if you haven't taken a practice test at all yet. I'd start prepping and see how you score on one. That'll give you an idea of how much time you'll need. 3-4 months of prep should be plenty, though, in general. Just depends on your starting point and your goal.

Thanks for the fast reply Nancy. My goal is 2200+ first try. I haven't taken any sort of practice (gr 11 in canada).

here are the books I've decided on:

College Board official Guide
cracking the sat - princeton
barrons 2400

I'll see how I go. From what I've read it's mostly about preparing and that those books should be more than enough.

I think I'm going to take the SAT I in March 08.
I'm aiming for 2100+

Thanks again.

I just discovered Grammatix (grammatix.com)and it really improved my CR score with 100 points in 2 days! Really! I think it is awesome and along with the Official Guide, you don't need anything else to prepare.

did you buy their online book angelutza??????

good thread, I'm in the same position as Jaan. gonna give it a bump

Actually, a friend of mine bought it and sent it to me, but he said it made all the money. I prepared with several books, Barron's, Arco and The Official Guide (this is why I didn't feel like buying something else), but their strategies really didn't work out well for me.
