How Tough Is It To Be A Vegan Yalie?

I'm a vegetarian who wants to become fully vegan this summer but I'm wondering how tough this will be to accomplish at Yale. While it is sometimes obvious to see eggs, milk, or cheese in food, it sometimes is not (some types of bread for example).

I'm guessing that you can't read the ingredients from the cafeteria food so how will I be able to tell if the food is completely vegan? Will I have a lot of options?

I'm not even sure if the meal plan is mandatory Freshmen year but I want to be sure of this before I come a vegan.

Thanks.

Once you’re there, you can use this: [What we offer, Dining: Yale University](http://www.yale.edu/dining/options/menusadvanced.html)

we have a lot of vegan options. at least one at every meal plus a full salad and fruit bar. and yes the meal plan is necessary freshman year.

I know that, in my limited experience (i.e., Branford during Bulldog Days), the ingredients for all of the hot menu items were listed right next to the dish. :)

There are vegetarian restaurants near campus, too, and usually at vegetarian places you can find vegan options like no-ones business.

The dishes have ingredients listed, so you’ll be able to know what is and isn’t vegan.

There’s always a vegan option. Sometimes they get repetitive, but all told it’s pretty good.

I know someone who’s a vegan, and she manages. I’m a vegetarian, and i find the dining situation fine. Sometimes it’s very good, and sometimes it’s disappointing. It depends on the day. In general the dining halls are pretty good.

Also, you should check out Claire’s… it’s a vegetarian/vegan restaurant on college and chapel, across from the south corner of old campus. There are lots of other places for vegan food too.
