I'm an incoming Freshman, currently vegetarian but transitioning into veganism. How hard is it to be vegan at Rice? Would there be food for me at the cafeterias, or would I have to eat elsewhere?

I kind of doubt the serveries have vegan dishes on a regular basis. (Any students want to comment? Do some serveries have more options than others?) You might have to pick and choose from a variety of side dishes (grains, legumes, etc.), the salad bar, sandwich bar. I’m sure it can be done, but as you probably already know, being a vegan can take some creativity when you’re not cooking for yourself.

Along with the daily vegetarian choices shown on Tilgaham’s link, Tuesday Farmer’s Market (on campus) provides options, and there’s a fairly close Whole Foods. I’ve heard from an alum, a while back, about a great market that sells vegetables, etc. not far away. Once you’re on campus, you’ll learn from fellow vegetarians … maybe shop together, stake out the best veggie-oriented serveries …

Speaking as a vegetarian, the serveries all have daily vegetarian options (North, South, and West have the best), and I’ve had NO problem finding things to eat. While this may not be sufficient for veganism, they’re clear to point out (usually on the menu sign) when a dish is vegan-friendly, and we have things like a salad bar and vegan yogurt available every day.

One of my best friends is a vegan and she has had basically no problems, at least on campus. I also know several vegetarians. I think the serveries do a fairly decent job of making sure there are options for them, even if they aren’t as extensive as the non-vegan/vegetarian options.
