How truthful do you think this is?

I have a friend that had a meeting with our guidance counselor a few weeks ago. He helped her plan out her classes for her junior and senior years. She has been telling everyone that they called Yale to talk about her and that apparently Yale "loved" her. She is only a sophomore and I know for a fact that her grades aren't the best (she made C's all throughout Geometry, and has made B's and C's in various other classes). She has a 3.3 weighted GPA, I know this for a fact. She is in Chorus and that is basically her only EC. She's telling everyone that Yale told her if she made A's in all of her upcoming classes, they wanted to talk to her again. Do you guys think there is any truth to this?

She’s almost definitely lying. Yale would never tell her they “loved” her, especially because she’s a sophomore with a mediocre GPA. Schools never give promising news like that in general because there’s always the possibility she will get rejected, even if they do “love” her (which is very very unlikely anyways). end of story, she’s probably making it up, but you really shouldn’t care! don’t stress yourself out about stuff like that, because it only gets worse junior and senior year and the best way to deal with it is to tune stuff like this out :)

I’ve interviewed 200+ jaw-dropping ,mega qualified students for +20 years and have given dozens of presentations to rooms filled w/students and parents about Yale. I would NEVER say “Yale loves you”. While it might, with a six percent admit rate, there’s no sense in saying anything even remotely similar.

Just “smile and nod” to your friend’s fantasy.

BTW: these 200+ kids? They get admitted about the same rate as the school admits them. The vast vast bulk get rejected and go to other great colleges.

Look at Yale’s Common Data Set. For students from high schools that report rank, 100% of the freshman class was in the top half of their class and 99% were in the top quarter of their class. A weighted GPA of 3.3 is unlikely to place this student anywhere near a plausible chance of acceptance.
Maybe the college counselor actually said to her something like “I think you are fantastic and you need to get your grades up before we can talk again about highly selective colleges”.

She’s lying. She must not have a lot of self-confidence if she needs to make up a story like this.

People lie about stuff like this all the time. I’ve learned not to pay attention to them. What your friend is saying doesn’t make sense. I would just ignore her.

Is she an athlete? That’s the only way this might have some reality.

person is a 2nd semester Sophomore in one EC, chorus. Lacrosse is the only one that allows pre-senior year recruiting I believe, Hunt
