So, today I received a letter from UMBC telling me that I was deferred to RD for their school. I'm just very confused as to why considering this was a big safety for me.
My stats:
-3.6 UW GPA
-1840 SAT
-10 AP Courses (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, World History, US History, Envi Sci, Calc AB, English Lit, English Lang, Gov't and Politics, European History)
-Hooks...well I'm African American
-Strong extracurriculars and National Honor Society

I'm just very confused? I don't understand how I can get into the honors college at a school with a 48% acceptance rate, but not even UMBC (>60% acceptance rate). Weird. Should I call and find out more information on this? Many of my peers got in had lower stats and I'm just at a loss for words...

I wouldn’t worry about it. You are in the RD pool and will most likely be accepted at that point. Your stats are above average for this school. I have heard that it is more difficult for people to get in if they are in-state. Congrats on your other acceptance. If this is not where you really want to go, I wouldn’t worry about it. If you truly want to go, then calling admissions and showing genuine interest would be appropriate. Calling and asking what happened is most likely a poor idea.

I am sure you will have more acceptances to come. Good Luck.

I agree with Anne, you will be fine in RD pool, but you should call Admission Office to find out why? UMBC only looks at Reading and Math SAT scores, if your Writing score is really high, it might be an issue. Anyway, call them for the answer. Good luck.

UMBC has been a safety school for many students, me included, but you have to recognize that it’s raising its standards. I go to UMBC and I wasn’t very thrilled at first (I only decided to go because I got a full ride) but going to school now it’s really a lot better than I thought. Looking at your scores it might look very confusing, but you should be fine in the RD pool.

@In2929 Just wondering, if you think a school is your safety and you get deferred or rejected, could that be a sign of Tufts Syndrome? With safety schools in general?

@Slytherclaw12 My son was accepted EA this year for UMBC with the below stats so I think the previous poster’s suspicion that the stats for UMBC EA are getting harder might be on point:

-3.9 UW GPA
-2080 SAT/33 ACT
-11 AP Courses (Microeconomics, Calc AB, Calc BC, Statistics, World History, Physics, Chem, English Lit, English Lang, Psychology, Music Theory)
National Merit Semifinalist, AP scholar with distinction, and strong extracurriculars.

This is what I thought also. However, I was informed by UMBC that all three scores are considered. This is stated on the UMBC website on this page:
