Howard University Class of 2020!

@umsigmadom I absolutely agree. I honestly never thought a university could be this disorganized and still have people attend. If I hadn’t heard from them by now I would have dropped them completely off my list. It makes the school look terrible in general

@umsigmadom or others, have you heard from other HBCUs about merit money? I know Hampton has made offers, but what about NCAT?

Have any international applicants received scholarship information from Howard?

@Snowybuny Congrats  I also got the founders scholarship (I AM EXTREMELY GRATEFUL) but not sure if it covers what it used to cover. And I never received my official letter through mail, which was supposed to come around the 22nd of March (I’m from jersey btw)

Yes, Tuskegee, Hampton, Morehouse and Xavier ALL included their Merit scholarship information with their admissions decisions. Our son heard back from each of these HBCU’s in a very reasonable time, and according to the schedule they committed to.

We are still waiting on Spelman, though I know they dont give much merit.

@umsigmadom congratulations on your son’s other options. Grab and go! I hope that complaints have been made to the Provost or other higher ups at HU. I am stunned at the issues, especially the scholarship changes with old info still on the site. One of our younger children wants to go to HU. My current student there loves it, but said you must be a self advocate or have an advocate (which she says honors and athletes seem to have). But if the admissions is still a mess when his time comes well…he needs to be open to other options.
@partyof5 you may know more than I, but my understanding is that much of this year has been filled with firing of admins and reorganization. Admissions clearly needs to be on the chopping block!
Finally, @Trackislife2016 congratulations on the Founders!

@ReturningFavor that sounds about right from what Ive heard. I know they were still working on applications last week, which is crazy considering accepted students day is tomorrow. As I said, they are missing out on a whole crop of middle income kids. They couldve gotten rid of Legacy, and changed Captstone to just tuition, thereby still getting a good crop of merit kids but cut down the number. There are a ton of kids at Howard with no “need”, and the only reason they came was the merit scholarships.

Accepted Students Day is TOMORROW?? If heads don’t roll for this, it will be a travesty. Just…wow…

I have a friend who’s still waiting…this is crazy.

I asked them about when the rest of decisions will be out. This is what they said in the email.

“We will continue to release decisions weekly. We appreciate your patience and are extremely grateful that Howard University is one of your college choices.”

My friend got her acceptance today so maybe this is true. Still haven’t received mine yet though.

Yay! I was accepted today! and they said they would be sending out the official financial aid in another email (I don’t know what date that is but given that it said early March I have absolutely no idea) Xd

To all the parents–The President of the University did say last year that changes will be made in the Administration Building especially with regard to customer service, training and student support.

To all the students–If Howard is your first choice, remain persistent and keep calling/emailing. However, if a full ride is offered from another college or university I suggest you take it without delay.

To everyone–According to my sources in admissions, Howard has received over 30,000 applications but this is no excuse; I have high expectations from my university and I expect better.

My husband’s childhood friend was at ASD yesterday with his son, who was accepted last month. He had Howard as a back up and had gotten into UVA just a day or two ago. Well, after ASD he was sold on Howard. The feel of the campus, his conversations with some kids who had turned down other ‘top’ schools and had no regrets (and found academic kinship in engineering, honors programs, mock trial (or is it moot court?), etc.), and the sense of pride in being a black man sold him.
His dad (who would prefer UVA because of cost but fully understood his son’s choice of HU) was VERY frustrated for others who had not even received an acceptance yet (including his son’s friend who was with them, for whom he could not get an answer)! They also talked with another parent with one graduating and one coming in who said that last year’s yield was way higher than expected and they are dealing (as poster above said) with huge numbers now.
My concern is that if that happens again (very high yield) in spite of all of the issues, then the issues may not be truly realized by the higher ups and addressed.
As hard as is it to make time to complain to a school you may not even end up going to, for the ‘greater good’ I hope that some here who must (as well you should) grab other offers (or will do so because of a bad admissions experience), --well I do hope that you complain to those above the admissions office. They need to know that they are missing out on some great candidates and impacting the already questionable HU admin reputations. Our kids there (and alumni) should not have to keep saying “In spite of the horrible HU administration it is worth it to be here”.

@ReturningFavor I will be sending a letter to the President. As I said up thread, they are missing out on a ton of excellent students.

My child said ASD was very underwhelming yesterday. They only had about 400 or so kids, when they normally have around 1000. I am not shocked because they eliminated Legacy, and added a need component to Capstone, not to mention they are still processing applications. They are missing out on a great student in my child, and you would think they would see that they already have a high performing sibling there.

Have you heard anything yet? My son also applied EA and on 12/7/15 they sent him an email saying his app. was processing. I called in Feb. when we still hadn’t heard anything and they had no record of him even applying. Told him to apply again. So he reapplied this time using the common app. So I call again in early March and guess what, they have lost his second application. After some searching they locate the second app. Turns out another student with the same name and born on the same date as my son has applied. Maybe some of their info. has been commingled. To date we have still header nothing and I also need help off the ledge. This is so completely unacceptable I don’t know what to do. I am a 1990 HU alumna and apparently nothing has changed since I graduated. My son has been accepted to all of the other colleges he applied to but HU is his first choice so he doesn’t want to commit anywhere else until he has a decision from HU. This is so frustrating.

@lawmom93 your situation warrants a call to the dean of students or provost(whomever is over admissions), as well as to alumni relations. Complain to those above. That’s ridiculous.

Thanks ReturningFavor. I plan to make another call on Monday.

@lawmom93 OMG, I would called the presidents office everyday until I had resolution.

I just called Howard and they said that they will be sending acceptance letters the rest of April and into MAY. I’m honestly losing hope because this is getting ridiculous.
