So, I'm a long time lurker and first time poster.

I sadly got rejected from all the Uc's I applied to except Riverside. So, I'm just wondering how's the neighborhood around the school? I've actually driven around there and taken a quick glance of the campus, but what is the neighborhood really like? Is it dangerous? Is it scary at night?

UCR the campus itself is very safe. But it gets sketchy if you go further away from the campus. So, people don’t usually walk around by themselves at night.

yuppp. and most people say that there’s nothing to do unless you have a car. it depends what you’re into though. downtown riverside around the campus is pretty jank but further down it’s really pretty.

Hmm so like i’ve been reading up on the campus. So, supposedly the east side of the campus borders a rich neighborhood? Is that correct? Also, where is the university village? Is it on the east? and where are the Greek houses? I might consider joining one. Is that a good idea?

Sorry, I’m just really curious and I’m seriously considering going here. Thank you in advance.

hmmm i’m not too sure about the east side of the campus borders because I really never got out of the campus lol. The university village is only about 5 - 10 minutes walk from the campus. you just have to go straight from the arts building. It’s on University Ave and Iowa street. I believe it’s safe most of the time except late at midnight.

I don’t think UCR has Greek houses. Instead, most Greek Parties happen at someone’s house. But I believe UCR still has one of the biggest Greek organizations on campus.

there is a rich neighborhood, but i believe it is to the southeast, and it does not directly border the campus. the uv is to the east. there are no official greek houses, but that is not atypical of a UC. Davis recognizes greek houses, but does not have an official row. irvine doesnt have a real row, although they made dorm like greek housing. merced, ucsd, and ucsc don’t have greek rows either. Riverside is thinking of a 15 year plan to make a row like irvine’s. (meh, wish we could have a real one) However, many of riverside’s greek orgs do have houses which they treat like their official house. it depends on which frat/sorority you’re looking at though. as for joining one, you should definetly rush a couple and see if theyre right for you. each frat/sorority is different, so it’s a good idea if you find one that suits YOUR personality. However, don’t consider that to be a viable housing option. I don’t think there’s a single greek org that has all its brothers and/or sisters living under one roof. with no official greek housing, there are no houses around that are big enough to accomodate any entire frat or sorority.

Ah I see! Okay, so I guess I’ll try to rush some fraternities.

So, call me a pansy, but I’m reading all these stories of sexual assaults and stuff around the campus. I’ve even read about something called a “rape trail” on college *******? Does that exist? I mean yeah, I’m a guy, but damn that still scares the living hell out of me and makes my heart sink!

By the way @x8equalsDtilde and @linoch
Do you guys/gals both attend there now? Or are you guys/gals alumni? Just curious. :D

Yeah, Riverside is not exactly the safest place. I mean ON campus is relatively safe, but once you go a few blocks out, it’s kind of dangerous. And about the rape trail…yeah I’ve heard of it and it is kind of a scary thing. But honestly, don’t let these things scare you off. It doesn’t matter if you’re a guy or a girl, nobody should be out alone at night anyways. There’s gonna be people walking around at night because of night classes and if you can find someone to walk with you back to the dorms or something then you’ll be fine! The campus also has escort services that you can call, but I’ve never used them…

lol just dont go outside of campus alone at night. the CAMPUS is safe. the area surrounding the campus, ehhh not so much.

the rape trail is the scary dark trail behind veitech. i dont think anyone has ACTUALLY been raped there haha.

i carry around pepper spray and a rape knife and rape whistle. i used to have a rape button, but then it went off in lecture and that was hellaaa embarassing, so i dont do that anymore. =P
