how's the weather up there?

i'm from the south. i won't lie. i love oberlin, and i think i could brave the frigid weather and snow from november until april. but i'm having doubts now that it's getting so nice and warm in NC. i honestly think i am happier when it's warm and sunny. so, all you obies, how awful is the weather really? do most people handle it fine? do people get...depressed? does it take away from the experience? i visited oberlin in december and it was pretty cold and a little snowy. i'm a runner (which is also a big thing...will i be able to run year round?) and when i visited, i got up saturday a.m., put on my tights and sweatshirt and earband and gloves and went on a long run and was quite cold but fine. but i really want to make sure i can handle the prolonged coldness and still be able to run and be happy. what do you guys think?

hix why didn't you post this in my thread too ("cold weather")? now we have 2 threads talking about the same thing...a little bit confusing right?^^ any moderator out there please join our threads for the sake of clarity and convenience, thanks :)

oops sorry, somehow i totally skipped over yours or i most def would have done that. well, this one is near the top so if people post responses in just this one the other will soon disappear.

p.s. nhyn, i read your thread.....what/where is VN? and 20 celcius....that's 68 fahrenheit?! geez. you definitely have some adjusting to do. i thought NC was bad but it rarely gets below 20 fahrenheit (which is....about -6.5 celcius...?)

VN is Vietnam, a far, far away country in Asia hihi...you definitely know it right? I'd be really dissapointed (at the fact that my country is not well-known) if you dont :D
anyway, regarding the weather, I found a very interesting description from oberwiki.net (taken from livejournal): "I'm from Redondo Beach, California, and my first year here I froze to death the day it snowed in November. They preserved my body and let it thaw out in April, when we finally saw the sun for the first time in five months. Some of the students were quite unused to the sun by this point, so they burst into flames. We use their ashes to create a special Ohioan sunscreen to protect us from the sun for the few months we actually see it." —siendght (2005 Aug 2)

This scares me to death, at the same time cracks me up everytime I read it :D

I'm a cleveland native, so I guess I'm accustomed to the cold weather, but it really doesn't bother me that much. This year's been fairly warm, with stretches of 50's weather in mid january. I was actually kind of depressed this year when it didn't snow for christmas. We were just reading an Emily Dickinson poem about snow today in English and it reminded me how much I love it and how pretty it is. I'd miss it. That's why I only applied in schools from ohio north.

I live relatively close to Oberlin (little less than an hour's drive) so our weather's about the same. Saying I've lived here all my life, it's not very shocking to me, but the weather here is kinda spontaenous. One day it will be hailing and the next day the sun is burning your eyes. This past winter has been warmer than usual, but typically the coldest time of the year is winter break, when you won't be there anyways.

i suspected that VN was an abbreviation for vietnam.....and i have indeed heard of it (no cause for alarm, i'm not completely dense.) i think it is so cool that oberlin attracts people from allllll over. are you going for the conservatory?

getting back to the thread topic, a further question for any current obies or people who live in ohio: does the lack of sunlight make people depressed or.....? i can deal with cold if need be (especially if there is snow!), but i mean, it seems awful that the sun pretty much disappears for months on end.

nope, im no where near "good enough" for the con. :( i think its not just Oberlin, but American education in general attracts people from all over ^^
and just to repeat my question in the other thread: do we have to stay inside all the time since it snows for 5 months a year? that can be really depressing ^^

no way! there's much fun to be had in the snow. Skiing, sledding, snowball fights... Granted, you do need a good coat, but it's not so cold that everyone's stuck inside.

I love the snow, it's why winter is my favorite season! (and not just for snow days mind you!). I think you'll very quickly adjust to it being colder than you're used to.

I'm from Virginia / DC area and to me Oberlin is cold. and it's been a mild winter. but....you're busy....you're in the library...you're studying....you're at parties or performances...I'm dealin with it...and I'm glad I didn;t go to Maine !

wow...now i can rest assured that i'll survive the weather there ^^ thanks guys ^^

How the heck am I going to survive there? I'm from CALIFORNIA.

Don't worry, therainman, there are plenty of students here from California and all of them seem to manage. I'm from Oregon, and it's a lot colder than I'm used to, but I've enjoyed the change. Who knows, maybe you will too!

The good thing is during the coldest part of the year you'll be on break!
