So I got an email today saying I was admitted to the IU Hudson Holland Scholars Program for 6000$/year. I already committed to IU and sent in my housing prior to getting the scholarship. Will this affect where I live at all? I'm not quite sure what I'm getting into, and the fact that I have to sign a contract worries me a little. I'm an accounting major waiting on my DA petition if that helps at all. My top living choice is KLLC then NW. Please help! I really appreciate every response! Thank you!

Btw, I did the Selective Scholarship Application a few months back which is likely what this is from

Thanks!

Congratulations! I only know about the Hudson & Holland Scholars program from what I have read on the IU website, but I didn’t read anything that mentions a specific housing requirement for Hudson & Holland Scholars. I assume you can live anywhere, including the KLCC, and your H&H involvement should not affect your housing choice at all. Is there something in the H&H contract that mentions housing? I would think the contract would detail “what you’re getting into”, which may be mandatory involvement in certain H&H programs.

i don’t believe i have to live in a certain place upon re-reading it multiple times, however, it seems i have to participate in L.E.A.D., which i will look into unless someone knows what it is. Also, I believe I have to take a certain course or something. All of this is rather confusing and not straight forward at all.

so is this for URM’s only?

Underrepresented minorities are given priority, but it’s open to everyone.

OP, there is not a housing requirement. However, you are expected to take certain classes and so projects for the program as well as participate in all of their seminars and activities.

Congratulations! I applied through normal application, not through the SSA. Unless they’re just sending out applications for SSA students ATM and still reviewing, doesn’t look like I’ve been accepted. I am a white male; however, I have a long track record with social justice/cultural background.

Hope I helped!

ao8capsIU, Hudson Holland is a great program, with very few requirements. The only class I know of that you must take is the one below in the fall semester of your freshman year. It should be an easy A for your gpa.

You also have to attend a mass meeting held at the convention center in Bloomington, on one Saturday in fall. This is the LEAD conference-- it is not a class, just a one day event with free food. Not a big deal at all. Also a “town hall” meeting once each semester which occurs on a Saturday. I think they also want you to take one practice advanced degree test during your four years, depending on your major, such as the GRE, LSAT, MCAT, etc., but it is free and a good experience if you plan to attend grad school. You can take it through Kaplan in Bloomington or some other Kaplan office.

Looks like you will get $6,000 per year, but, as a Kelley student, you can turn that money into about $34,000 over the course of your four years if you add the $1,000 per year Kelley gives each Hudson Holland student that maintains a certain gpa and if you keep your gpa over 3.7 each semester through the end of your junior year, which is worth $1,000 for six semesters, beginning fall of your sophomore year. 24K + 4K + 6K = 34,000

You can’t go wrong with this program. It is essentially free money and good support (career counseling, tutor offerings, etc.) and helping you get acclimated to college life.

Definitely no housing requirement.

Another requirement is completing an internship before the beginning of your senior year. This is not a big deal, as you would probably be doing an internship anyway as a business student. They will help you get an internship; good companies like Cook Medical and Altria work with Hudson Holland to provide internships, or you can just get one on your own; even a non-paid internship in the summer at twenty hours per week will suffice to meet the requirement.

Are all accepted applicants contacted the same day or is it rolling? I applied later, towards the end of the deadline in February. Like I said, I had to apply based on the individual application and not through the SSA. How many people receive admittance?

I don’t know the schedule for contacting admitted students.

The seminar last year had 234 students per the schedule posted above. Students attend the seminar the first year they are in the program. I’m guessing about 210 or so were freshmen. People also join after their freshman year.

Thanks bthomp1, been a major help!

WOW! bthomp1, thank you so much for the information, I REALLY appreciate it. I will send in my form tomorrow! Thank you!

Coste, You’re right, I just read a few hours ago that they value people from under-represented backgrounds, and I’m Hispanic from Pennsylvania, so that’s likely why I received the scholarship just in case you were curious. I really hope you get the scholarship as well because it sounds like you deserve it! I hope to see you on IU’s campus in the fall! Class of 2017!
