I know there is information regarding the Hutton Program in several other threads, but I was hoping someone could condense it into this thread…How do you know if you are eligible to apply, or do you receive direct admission? What are the real benefits and downsides of being in Hutton? Can you receive considerable scholarship money from being in Hutton? Lastly, if you are in Hutton, are you required to take honors courses (I’ve seen conflicting answers)? Thanks!
You can apply or get direct ‘admission’ to Hutton. DD2 went direct. Otherwise there is a process to apply I believe. I do not believe there’s any restrictions as to who could apply.
Benefits… More thorough advising, tho depending on major this may not be a big issue. Freebies and discount tickets for plays and such; Hutton specific events; honors sections of classes and if you do 21 credits or some such you are eligible to graduate with honors. Lots of interesting honors classes, no point in taking Honors Calc for example if there are some small class sized seminars and such that are really interesting (unless of course you love Calc).
There are some Hutton scholarships, not so easy to get from what I have heard.
Fantastic - thank you for the information @turbo93

There are essentially no downsides, and the upside is that you get more choices for classes. Most honors classes have good professors and good students, and several of them are on interesting topics. You don’t have to take any honors classes, but you can take 21 credits to get the notation if you want:

Still do it even if you don’t think you want to do the notation. There is literally no downside because you choose how many honors classes you want to take. You might find that you have extra space in your schedule and there is an interesting honors class that fits well. Most of these classes have very high grade distributions, which can be searched here: http://gradedistribution.registrar.indiana.edu/
The only downside is the onerous-sized ‘No Parents Allowed’ sign at the Hutton building door during new student orientation advising :). Go across the street to the IMU, grab a coffee, and prepare to spend an hour or two waiting for your student there as advising is pretty thorough.
Honors classes can be found all over the place actually; DD signed up for the IFS (a 2-3 week Intensive Freshman Seminar) and several of the IFS offerings are or can be made Honors. Some Honors classes are different than the regular, i.e. Calc, supposedly Calc 1 H involves proofs :-& ) but Honors Biology is the same but with extra discussion or presentations etc.
