I am in 9th grade. I took the SAT last year and got 2100 (800 math 620 writing 680 reading). I am involved in math club and science Olympiad in my school. Last year I got a 5 on the AIME. I also volunteer at a library to help students with homework. This quarter I got one A- out of all my classes, but I think I can work my way up to an A in that class by the end of the semester. I am taking calc this year for math (A this quarter). I think I can get a 5 on the Ap calc BC based on practice tests. I am planning to take SAT 2 math 2 this year. Also, my school offers many volunteer opportunities in places. My school is a pretty hard school by the way. Each year about 5% of students go to HYPSM. I can say that I am one of the most academic oriented people in my grade. What else do I need to do, other than obvious things like sports.

You’re starting rather early. But that’s really good! What is your GPA, if you don’t mind my asking? Or, at least, your GPA so far this year?

Too early to tell. Speaking from personal experience I had a GPA drop during sophomore year (nothing major, but it screwed up my rank). It seems as if you are on track, but nobody will really be able to give you an accurate response for another year (at least).

My GPA is 3.93

It sounds like you are a very solid student. In terms of academics, keep doing what you’re doing.

Here’s some advice for the rest:

Be a good person. Be nice to your fellow students, generous with your time and energy, honest and upright in all you do. Not only will it make your life richer, but your letters of recommendation will be stronger. Teachers like nice kids.

Explore what you love. Take risks and be unafraid to fail. There are crowds of students who make high grades and scores by taking the safe road, but the schools you’re hoping to attend don’t simply want another cow following the herd. They want students who will stretch themselves. Some of the most successful people have fallen flat on their faces, many repeatedly.

Don’t focus your attention on getting into one of a tiny group of schools. Make the most of your time in high school and when the time comes you’ll have options. They may not be the options you foresee now. You may like your new options better.

bump… I would like a few more responses

You seem on the right track! Make sure to land at least a couple of leadership positions in your activities! Also, figure out what you like in school. Do you like to have personal relationships with your teachers? Do you like small or large class sizes? Are you an active participant in class discussions? This will help you in your college search later on.

^To add to that, there are plenty of schools that are academically intense/rigorous and not Harvard, Yale, or Princeton. Take a look at some smaller schools, like Amherst, Carleton, and Bowdoin, just to name a few of the top liberal arts schools in the country.

I’d say a very slim chance. most people who go to HYPSM are taking BC freshman year. An A- anywhere will kill your chances. That SAT is awful. Sorry, but it’s true.
If I were you, I’d get off the computer and simply study, study, study. If not, you might be degraded to going to University of Nebraska.

^I disagree. I personally know people who attend Harvard, Yale, Cornell and Princeton. These people took BC in their junior years. If you’re in 9th grade and got a 2100, good job! That’s a great starting point. I suggest taking SAT preparation classes.

These schools are looking for more than a cookie-cutter valedictorian who got a perfect score on his SATs. You obviously have what it takes to compete for these types of schools. Don’t just focus on academics; focus on things that make you stand out from the rest of the prospective applicant pool. Work on your tests, but also find out what makes you, you. Don’t go crazy trying to impress the application readers with your amazing scores: be a person, not a number.

Besides, why stress about that now? Just enjoy being a high schooler for a while! Wait until the end of sophomore year or the summer before junior year to get the college jitters-I speak from experience.

As much as Ivies say they want people, all they want are numbers. And yours are lacking. Luckily, you have time to make it up. But if you are certain that’s where you want to go, say goodbye to your life. Your only chance. You’re already behind.

I am taking BC freshman year (I am in freshman year now). I know my SAT is bad. And do I need a 2350+ by freshman year for HYPSM? The A- can go away by the end of the year (only the end of year grades go on the transcript for my school). And I forgot to mention my technology leadership EC I am taking.

yes, they expect 2350+ freshman year. most people at HYPSM are done testing freshman year because they have 2350+ and a 35+ on the ACT. your ECs suck and will bar you from any of those schools. you’ll need to find math classes to take your other years or else they’ll think you’re a slacker. why are you on the computer right now when you could be volunteering?

Yolo111-
Rapfan313 is just messing with you. Your scores and grades are excellent. (Shame on you, rapfan313. :))

Just remember to have a life to go along with your stats.

Idk, maybe rapfan313 is just trying to ■■■■■ the ■■■■■. I mean a HYPSM chance request? In 9th grade? With the you know, oh, I took SAT in 8th grade, only 2100 ■■■ what do I need to do?? Seems like the perfect combo to try to push CC’s buttons. And to top it off, his username is Yololo111. Maybe not, but smells a bit like a ■■■■■ to me.

yolotrolol

nuff said

Seriously.

^Yup, you’re probably right. I’m a sucker for a confused kid. Perhaps too much of a sucker.

I am really not a ■■■■■. Everything I said is actually pretty realistic (2100 SAT in 8th grade actually sounds pretty low to me. Or maybe it’s just because my friends have scores in the high 2100’s to low 2200’s). And my username is not very relevant. I couldn’t come up with anything so I just made up something random. I just kind of want a pretty rough idea of my possibilities and what I would need to do.

bump… A couple more replies that are meaningful.
