I-64 in winter

So, we picked a great time to have planned our one and only Fall trip to UVA (for a visit and for the VT game)! We'll be driving Thursday morning and coming from the west across WV on I-64.

Having never done this trip in winter before, and seeing as WV is supposed to be getting 4-8" of snow today (Wed) across this region (between Charlston and Lewisburg). What kind of condition can we realistically expect I-64 to be in on Thursday? Just want to know what to expect - although we'll stop and check ahead once we get to Charleston before getting into the more mountainous area. Is 64 generally kept up in this area? Or are we looking at a nightmare? Any experienced drivers of this route out there? Thanks.

I can’t speak about current conditions, but the state does a good job of maintaining I-64. I only know the segment of I-64 from I-81 to the east. The portion through the mountains is prone to fog, which is why they added lights under the highway to show you where the lanes are located. Once when I drove through, that was the only way to see the lanes. I believe they may also have underground automatic spraying of road chemicals on that segment. The rest of I64 east of 81 is usually clear sailing.

Thanks Charlie - that’s very helpful. With any luck we’ll hit Charlottesville by 3pm today. According to my S, he only saw 4 other people on grounds yesterday - ah, the joys of being OOS. Hopefully he’ll enjoy the turkey we’re bringing. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Well, all worry was for nothing - there was little to no snow anywhere on the route, and the roads were clear and dry. In fact, we made record time due to the lack of traffic - I doubt we’ll be so lucky on the return trip Sunday. It was a beautiful day to be touring grounds - too bad everything was closed!

Enjoy your visit with S and the game tomorrow. My S is heading back to Charlottesville today. While I’m sure he enjoyed seeing us, he just wants to get back to Charlottesville, his friends and attend the game tomorrow. Oh well…at least I had him for a few days.

I know this is late, but the interstates in VA, WV, and NC are extremely well-maintained. VA has to upkeep 95, 81, and 64 due to the sheer amount of traffic on them, and WV is well-prepared and seasoned at keeping their roads maintained. NC does well dealing with ice both in advance and during the storms. Obviously traveling during the storms isn’t advised by the states since those roads can be hilly, but usually within hours after the storms stop, they’re in good to great shape.

I-64 from Cville to Richmond can be finicky due to fog (I’ve only driven through once where I haven’t been affected by it) but they’ve done wonders in helping drivers recently and I haven’t ever seen an accident there.

It was a great visit (except seeing VT win - but being at the game was quite a treat). And the trip back was equally pleasant and uneventful. Maybe all of the warnings kept a lot of people off the roads. Thanks again for all the information on the road conditions - all good to know for future trips.

An an unrelated note - since most everything on Grounds was closed for the holiday, we took the opportunity to take the family to Monticello and have lunch at Michie Tavern (wow, yes, that chicken really is great!). Beautiful fall weather and what a blast.
