My name is Amin and I am a freshman in high school. I wasn't a very good student last year, and the year before that. I got a B- in algebra last year, and I am worried if that will bite me in the future. Like right now I am taking geometry and I currently have an A-, and overall my weighted GPA this year is 4.25. Recently I met up with some of my old classmates and some of them are taking calculus currently (one was in 10th grade), this worries me because will I be able to compare to these student's in the future? I am hoping to take Calculus in my senior year, lets say everything on our resumes is same, just that the other person took Calc in 10th Grade, and I took it in 12th, after all colleges do look at 10th and 11th grade years the most. Also I am trying to join various programs like CSF, and NHO (next year), what other programs are there? I heard of a couple programs that are called: RSI and SSP, what are those? By the way, I am aiming for UC Davis, and this may sound silly, but Stanford too...

Dude. You don’t need to be a math prodigy to get into HYPS. I promise. A B in eighth grade is not going to kill you, either. Just work on keeping up the GPA this year and next year.

Check out the Summer Programs forum for stuff about that. Then, take a breath. You. Are. A. Freshman. You don’t need to worry about this stuff quite yet. Get good grades. Get involved in your community. Do what you love, and do it well. The college stuff will fall into place.

Well, colleges don’t look at your middle school grades so don’t stress about those at all. Also, I second lookbeyond’s advice about chillin because it’s still very early for you to be worried. To eleviate the stress a bit for when it’s time for you to apply to schools, just work really really hard in your academic classes and get involved as lookbeyond mentioned. Also try to getting some leadership positions in whatever you may get involved in. Other than that, enjoy high school.

You. Are. A. Freshman. Get. Off. Of. Chancing. Threads.

I say this not scornfully (well, maybe a little bit), but seriously. Dude, don’t worry. When you’re a freshman, it’s all good if you keep working hard :).

however, in response to other posts, colleges may indeed see those middle school grades if they count for HS credit, because they count on the HS transcript. Not to worry. Your school may in fact exclude those grades, and if not, when submitting papers to your guidance counselor senior year, have them point out that there are middle school grades on the transcript, if they are not too favourable, as is the case with me.

You are a freshman, so calm down. First of all you have three more years and second of all it is possible to get into Stanford without a 4.0.

RSI and SSP are ridiculously selective summer programs and look very good on college apps you can find more on these on the summer program threads.
