I can't complete my major requirements at my current CC due to waiting lists.

I’m currently wanting to transfer to a CSU or UC for Microbiology.

I lost my priority registration at my local CC because I changed my major from English to Microbiology.
Therefore, I have an AA in English, and those classes obviously have nothing to do with Microbiology.
So I’ve had to start over by taking the needed math, chemistry, bio classes, and ect.
My problem is every school I want to attend says I should have Botany and Zoology completed.
There’s a problem though, I can’t get into these classes! They both are only offered once a year and I’m too high on the waitlist to get into the class.

Do you think not having these two classes will greatly affect my chances?

Thanks for any help!

Look to see if any other CC’s near you offer those courses. If not, it is possible that they are offered somewhere online. I’m sure it’s better to take those classes than not.

For a UC - if you miss a required class, you won’t really be considered.

For CSUs, it depends on the campus you are applying to.

I’d find a way to get the classes - on-line, alternate campus, whatever it takes.

@NCalRent I’ve looked online and alternate campuses (some as far as 2 hours away) and none offer them at a time I can take. They would interfere with the other classes I’m taking at my local CC that I also need to transfer. So it sounds like it’s not even worth my time to apply to the UC’s I wanted to apply to? Just CSU’s?

Neither of those classes are offered online at ANY CCC? I’d look thoroughly if I were you. You don’t have to attend a campus to take an online class.

It’s worth your time to do all that you can to take those classes. Are these Botany and Zoology courses Bio courses? I can’t find them on any articulation agreements. If they are Biology courses, make sure you take them, you should have them before you transfer regardless if you will be attending a UC or CSU. Also, I’m sure those two are offered online somewhere.

http://www.foothill.edu/schedule/catalog.php Foothill offers a number of online classes, perhaps they offer the two that you need.

An important question I would ask, since you already have an AA is are you a junior yet? Some of those schools might not look kindly on your overage of units.

I think @lindyk8 is more knowledgeable than I am regarding unit caps, but I believe it doesn’t matter how many units one takes at a CC, so long as all of there units are from a 2-year college and not a 4-year university.

As long as the courses are lower division you can take as many as you want.

And yeah, if those course are required, you really need to take them. However, if they really are a long drive, the UCs might give you a pass. Email the UCs you want and ask about the courses. Tell them the distances. They will let you know. And if they say it is OK, you will have it in writing.

Here’s a rolling online zoology:

There is also an online botany at SMC, but it includes field trips. So, don’t know how close you are.

@lindyk8 SMC is a 4.5 hour drive from where I live. But I will keep looking. Thanks.

@goldencub I haven’t been able to find any online. I will keep looking though. All the ones I have found have been on campus, about 1-2 hours from where I live, conflict with my current class schedule. Thank you.

@“aunt bea” I’m not worried about my units. Half of them are from my English degree that I am no longer pursuing so they don’t need to transfer over anyways.

OP, email and ask admissions. Get a straight answer. My daughter was missing a required course in her major at Davis, she emailed and told them the closest was a 40 minute drive and they replied it would be ok because there was not one offered in her district. She got accepted into the major without it.

Get an answer straight from the UC. We’re not admissions.

I also sent you an online zoology course you can do anytime at your own pace. Why don’t you check it out?
