Thank you guys so much, I really wanted and outside opinion, it would be my dream to go to UMD and I really hope I get in but I am so nervous. Thanks again
Try not to stress…(I know, easier said than done).
Congrats for being the first one in your family to go to college! FYI, there are lots of scholarships available (not specific to Maryland) that are targeted for students that are first generation in college, so be sure to talk to your guidance counselor at your high school for that information. I believe one of more popular sites for all kinds of scholarships is FastWeb…this is an “older” article, but still a good starting point for info http://college.usatoday.com/2012/01/30/the-10-best-sites-to-look-for-scholarships/
Thank you! I’ll definitely look into it. Do you think I have any chance to make it into UMD? I really hope so, it’s where I want to go but I’ve been rather pessimistic as the release date approaches.
@maryversity I saw your “The Facts about Chances” thread and I completely agree, in fact, it’s why I titled this post the way I did. Obviously as high school seniors waiting for college decisions is absolutely terrible, especially for those like me who have set their hopes on a school they are on the razors edge of being accepted. I count the days until next week with painful anticipation! I would also like to thank you for all the tremendously valuable information you’ve provided in these threads, they certainly clear things up. Go terps!
You live in Ohio, right? Even if you get into UMD, it will likely be too expensive as an out of state student. You should look at your in-state public universities as a starting point.
@intparent Obviously a lot of factors weigh into choosing a university and yes money is very important, but the state of my family concerning FAFSA, we literally being on the poverty line, I can’t really afford afford anything, so rather than going to the University of Akron for example we’re looking at Ohio State and UMD because they are what I hope I can reach. So in an essence, I am planning on getting some aid and some independent scholarships and whatever is left will have to be a loan. So why not a loan to go to Ohio State/UMD than a loan for Kent State. (Also personal factors help to outweigh the aspect of the greater, out of state tuition.)
You can only borrow $5,500 per year. Public universities give almost no need based aid to students from outside their state, and merit is usually limited as well. The taxpayers of your state give you a much better deal. Ohio State and other public universities in Ohio make sense. UMD does not.
Yes, but that is a federal loan, and besides, for the university I live by I would still have to borrow more than 5,500 even without room and board. (Akron) UMD makes sense to me because OSU will cost around 10,000 less, but UMD is in the top 15, with the first 8 the Ivy leagues, for what I hope to study, Mathematics. So we can take it or leave it.
@nvaughan75 Good luck to you! I hope you get in and get enough aid and scholarships to go. If not go with your back up plan and you csn always transfer to UMD!
