I don't get it.

Alright people, I have an issue over here. I've done a practice test in Princeton Review and got an 1810.

510 on V
580 on M
and 720 on W.

Why are most of the people here and other kids outside are getting 700-800s on Math?
Why do I always land in the 580-650? (600-620-ish)

Does anyone have a suggestion to how I can improve the Math section? I've omitted about 15 questions and got 4 wrong.
Please, I need quick advice. I'm a Senior now and I have my last time SAT to take in January 2010, which will be the third time.

For the Verbal I've done practices, and highest I got was 550. Others were 510 and 470.
I've reviewed Barrons Yellow Flashcards and Direct Hits Volume 2 only (not 1). Anybody?

I only got 1090 out of 1600 together for V + M.

There’s a serious problem if you’re omitting 15 questions… what is the main problem? Do you just not know how to do them or is it a time issue?

Secondly, I think that your verbal score is a cause for concern… 510 is really not that good. I don’t think you should be studying books like Direct Hits, I think you should improve on passages etc.

^I agree.

I think you should just keep practicing math (if there’s something you don’t know, go back into a previous chapter and review the material – math is something you can actually study).

The majority of the reading section is not vocabulary-based, but rather passage-based. I would say that you should consider looking at others’ threads on critical reading – for example, How to Attack Critical Reading Effectively, or what not. Getting proficient at passage reading and comprehension is key.

Memorize dem words. If you are short on time, math would probably be a better section to study for though. Review all the math chapters. If you have any other books, go over the math in them too. Strengthen your fundamentals. After you have a solid background, practice excessively and obdurately.

I have direct hits volume 2 at home, but not the volume 1… so is it bad? I’ve done all my barron flashcards. And Im still wondering what it takes to get questions on the CR right even though I already have the strategies to apply to the reading.

Continue to practice all CR sections from the College Board blue book. Once you finish all ten, go back and repeat the material. Once you are familiar with the questions, you will answer more and more correctly. In addition, a lot of passage-based reading is paraphrasing the answer. As for strategy, I would recommend reading one paragraph at a time (usually represents a complete thought) and then answer any corresponding questions. This forces you to read actively. I increased my CR score from the low-600s to a consistent 800 through this method. Before, I would reference the questions and annotate the passage, but this was a complete waste of time. Proponents of this method state that by reading the questions beforehand one “knows what to look for” but that just isn’t true.

Also, I never used Direct Hits although it is very popular on this website. I learned my vocabulary exclusively from an electronic dictionary that I carry with me at all times.
