I want to start writing my essay, but I don't know how to start so I am still doing some research... Can you guys share any tips with me?
I am an average student, I think I have a pretty 'balanced' life, meaning I am not an overachiever in many things, but I have suceeded many times.
I am a varsity volleyball player. I play the piano since I was small. I have always been pretty sporty too and I took many cooking/sweet design and drawing classes in my spare time. Also, last year I won the Spanish prize at my school if that counts for anything.
I am applying to a university to major on pre-med...

There are probably other things but I just can't think about them in a flash :(

We can’t tell you what to write. The best essay is the one that comes form YOUR heart, not the one that’s the most impressive topic. Adcoms are looking for well-written, passionate essays, not NECESSARILY ones about your accomplishments (although being passionate about your accomplishments can make an EXCELLENT essay).

i.e., You are writing about your trip to build houses in Uganda, writing “It was sad seeing people without homes in Uganda. It made me sad.” WON’T get you into a good school, while writing an AMAZING essay about the tree in your backyard and how its blooming flowers represent your life might.

rainbowrose - thank you so much, this is great advice! I completely agree with you: “the best essay is the one that comes form YOUR heart” I think I will make my essay personal and try making it readable enough to make the readers intrigued.
I have a doubt though, do I have to refer things in my essay to my chosen major? Or can the experiences be said randomly?

I would try to make a coherent essay rather than “random” but I’m not really sure what you mean by “random”. Relating to your major would be awesome because it shows colleges how you want to apply what you’ve already done to your college education. However, if it’s too forced it probably won’t come out great.

I’m actually only a rising HS senior, but I found this website VERY helpful.

Haha, cammms, you remind me of myself at this time of the year last year:p. Except for me, it was two weeks before the application deadline when I was having the writer’s block over the college admission essay, which was horrible,, and at the same time.

Of course not! But your essay should reflect the person that you are, with your unique interests and values. Those interests in turn should contribute to your choice of major. So, no, you don’t have to write about wanting to be a pre-med (actually, unless you have an appealing story in connection with wanting to major in medicine, don’t write about it).

In the end, I wrote about an utterly trite topic for my common app essay, (“the intricacies of nature”, which is so overdone) but it worked out okay for me because science and “exploring the unknown in nature” is something I am passionate about, and I thought the essay was a good reflection of my interests. For supplement essay, I wrote about shopping. Or rather, it was about a random moment in my life when I made a defining choice that showed my values and who I am as a person. On two of my acceptance letters to two of my top choice schools, the admission officers specifically noted on the letter that they enjoyed reading the latter essay and that contributed to the final admission decision, so I guess the topics were fine :).

Write about what you want another to know about you, and everything rainbowrose said =). Good luck!

Thanks xrCalico23, this also helps me a lot. By random I just meant any topic that wasnt specifically related to science and my interests…
I am glad your application turned out alright! And it really inspires me that eventhough you were under pressure to write your essay you actually made it in to the uni you wanted

I will make a first draft today, I have already started with an introduction, but I think it’s a bit hard to only write 300 words when I could tell stories haha but I guess its a good thing for me to only write down the substancial things rather than irrelevant events!

rainbowrose, I am browsing through the linjk you sent me!! I really appreciate this help!
